Hey everyone,
I'm mainly a coin collector, though I have collected a few bills, but gave that up since it's too expensive. Anyways, should I even bother to keep the star note $100? I already have two more somewhere here. Should I hold on to them, or just spend them? Also, Is the $50 worth anything?

I think that the $100 star note would be worth a little more than face value and should only go up in time. I would keep it. The $50 is just a serial number thing and I may keep it if I had it but if I needed the money it would be gone. I may be wrong but that's just my opinion.

If Docfishing is correct on the values I would spend them both if I needed it.

I don't need the money, so I'll keep them for now. I guess that by the time I have kids, they'll be worth something.

Hi, Amazon. I'm thinking that I'd keep the bills, though I'm unsure that they will ever have great value. From an investment perspective, you could probably achieve a greater return on $150 if you put it into a nice semi-key or key date coin. The one advantage of the bills, however, is that they carry large face value so there's little risk.

What I've been trying to do is keep all of my star notes, and when I'm ready to (finally!) put up a concise want list here will offer them in payment. Hopefully I'll be able to get a slight premium when buying coins from other members.

Notes like these are good for builing a feedback rating on ebay. Usually you can list them for face value + shipping and actually sell them. many times you will get more than one bidder and have it pay for the listing fee and final valuation fee.

docfishn,

one can argue that the star note is just a serial number thing. people see more into these than there really is. It's also interesting that the books list rarity based on federal reserve district when I have yet to meet someone who collects complete federal district sets.

Nevertheless, I personally would keep the star note and sell the $50. I think of my star note collection as my emergency fund. The beauty of it is, it has to be true emergency before I'd let them go. I can imagine it now, brother spends a night in jail because I would budge with the star notes to post bail.

My opinion is to spend both the $50 and the $100 star. If you are keepng notes for investment purposes these circulated notes aren't worth saving. If you really want stars I would invest in a few lower denominations in CU condition.
True, you may be able to break even with the $100 star on ebay but I'd be willing to bet you won't make any profit and it will end up being a waste of your time.
A good rule of thumb when collecting currency is to stick with uncirculated notes. many people start out collecting circulated bills but eventually focus on quality notes rather than quantity, same as in coin collecting.
