I sure hope I am posting this correctly and in the correct category.
If not, if anyone can direct me Id appreciate it, finding it difficult to navigate.
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has any knowledge of this coin. Is it a novelty?
It has an indian head on the front and 1880, and the back says 1/2 dollar. It is paper thin and super tiny, gold-ish in color. I've never seen anything like it.
I have other photos but they are too large to upload and I don't know how to downsize them, sorry.

Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks

Firstly to CCF!

The coin you have is, a gold issue. These are part of the California gold series and the one you have is likely a 25 Cent. These range in value from $150-$XXXXXX. Condition plays a key role, you coin seems to be in very good condition though.

Something to remember is that these are highly counterfeited, to sell as genuine pieces or as novelty items. If you can, in a separate topic, the weight, diameter, and high quality pictures that you can upload to a file sharing website like imgur.com and then link to your post.

Another think you can do, is take it to a local coin dealer and ask for an appraisal, make sure to mention you have no idea of it`s value and you DO NOT INTEND TO SELL IT.

I agree with zxcccxz.

Be careful with it.

Bwbandson,
Fellow member Zxcccxz is giving sound advice.
You need to learn what you have and double if not triple your confirmation.
You just started so you could post better pictures here for more help. We all learned or still learning to post pictures.

Edit. Please do not even think of cleaning this or any coin.

If there is a berry just right of R in DOLLAR on the reverse, then check the obverse to see if there is an overdate 8/7 on the second 8 in the date. If there is, then this is POSSIBLY a genuine BG-1067 round half, (Breen and Gillio wrote the standard reference on California fractional gold, the book is quite expensive and near-impossible to find). If real, it's ranked R.4 or fairly common within the context of these valuable coins. As mentioned, do NOT scrub, polish, or otherwise try to improve it in any way!

On the reverse, if there is a berry northeast of the R in DOLLAR rather than just right, then it MIGHT be a BG-1068, High R.5 (rarer): Thin date on the obverse, portions of the digits missing (esp. lower part of 1).

The images prevent any better assessment at this point. Learn to use the Image Optimizer here and post larger-resolution images of both sides. Good luck!

Best Regards,

George
