Last Friday I attended the Chicago International Coin Fair. I came across a dealer who had a 1921 George V Silver Five Cent in a big customized display holder. Having never seen one in person I asked him what the price was. He responded $9,500.

It was nice to see such a rarity in person even if it was WAY out of my price range.

At $9500 it would need to be atleast Good VF. My local coin dealer is pretty large and he had a ICCS VF-20 1921 5 Cent last month which he sold when he went to CICF.

There were 5 of them at the FUN show in Orlando, FL last January, brought there by a dealer at my request. I was hoping to do a trade for one of them but after seeing the coins in person I was totally disappointed.

3 were graded by ICCS and all three had problems, which were not noted on the holder. One was all hairlined from an obvious cleaning, and the other two had marks and rim dings galore. I have totally lost respect for ICCS anyhow and seeing these three pieces of expensive junk only reinforced my opinion of them. Of course the 2 PCGS-graded coins were overgraded, as per usual so I came away empty-handed.

I've come to the conclusion that the 1921 is not really rare, just overhyped, sort of like the U.S. 1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent.

@coinaddict:

It's good that you were looking to get one. ICCS can be weird in their way of grading. They don't note problems unless they are significant, they usually just NET Grade the Coin instead. Like putting a VF-20 cleaned as an F-15.

Most Large Dealers in Canada are very harsh with their grading and if you ordered something from J&M or the Calgary Coin, they would be justly graded. I know because these dealers will crack coins out of ICCS slips and put them in 2x2's if they think ICCS graded too high.

But I agree. The 1921 is not as rare as people think. The 1909-S VBD never appealed to me personally either. I'd rather put that money towards an actual rarity like the 1921 50 Cent or the 1946-C Newfoundland 5 Cent (Mintage of only 2,041).

Years ago when I was a teenager a coin shop a few miles up the road had a vg-f '21 nickel for $700... but I didn't buy -- no way I was paying that kind of money!

Ohh, kicking myself now...
