Thank you for letting me join the forum. I don't know how to classify this piece, it's not a coin but it's coin related but I don't know exactly what it is and was wondering if anyone here knew if it was an ornament, marketing piece or what? It's a 3" piece that resembles the 1864 Liberty Indian Head coin. Chrome or Nickel plated. No markings on the back. Seems too big and heavy to wear as a pendant around your neck? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Three inches is a bit big for a necklace, but then again think of Mr. T. With no idea of an age it might have been made in the 1960's or 70's they were never big on small during that time.
The only other idea I would have is a fob on a chain pull for a lamp... maybe, or a shade?

Thanks for your response and suggestions. This was picked up at an estate sale here in Florida and I don't know a thing about the age. I thought it might be an anniversary item put out around the 100th anniversary of that coin? But it seems newer to me. I can't find another one anywhere online. It weighs about an ounce

Call me crazy, but I'm seeing a Christmas tree ornament. I can't find a match online, but that looks like exactly the sort of thing I'd expect to see at the Mint gift shop.

I'm thinking the same direction as Finn235. See the ring thing attached to the top? It looks like it was meant to be hung somewhere. 100th anniversary of the Indian Head cent would be 1959, so it seems unlikely that this was a commemorative medal of sort.

I didn't even think of an ornament and the glass Christmas balls are about 3 inches so it seems like a good fit.

I would hang one of these on a wall somewhere in my house as a decorative object.

A big key chain fob? I like the Christmas ornament idea too.

Did some more poking around and still can't find an exact match although I did find some similar oversized novelty Indian Head cent ornaments. As an example: http://www.cafepress.com/+ihc_ornam...t=search-plaWhat interests me is the facial features... I would expect a better replication of the original's design from an ornament like this. The facial features alone seem to indicate that this ornament was at least designed by hand, if not also made by hand. There's a good chance this is an Etsy (or similar) product. Still, I would highly doubt that this is even as much as 20 years old. The date is unimportant... 1864 is one of the less common dates in the series, but was probably chosen for "antique" and "civil war" appeal. "Antiques" dealers generally care more about eye candy rather than genuine numismatic interest. As a ballpark figure, I'd say you're looking at a Christmas ornament that originally retailed for $10-25 if mass produced, or $25-35 if handmade. If it was mass produced, you should see some indication of the company that produced it, or at least where it was made.

Thanks for the input, it did occur to me that it might be a Christmas ornament, it just puzzled me that there was no maker marks on it and it seemed a little heavier than what I was used to in an ornament. Perhaps it had a sticker on the back at one point that was removed. I will definitely be visiting this forum again, lots of good stuff here.
