I see the mint does not sell capsules for silver American eagle coins, which I believe are 40.6 mm. Some capsules at 41 mm are sold for them. Does this allow too much movement. I know about the washers, but prefer visibility of the coin edges.

There are plenty of coin capsules sized just for american eagles on ebay. I think 41mm is just fine though; you'd have to start worrying once it hit the 0.8mm range.

Sorry for thread necromancy.

I have a bunch of extra ASE airtight holders. I have a morgan in a 2x2 which it barely fits in. Would it be a bad idea to put the Morgan in the ASE size holder? It will be in my display case so it won't move around much.

Another question.. How do you open the things? I mean I would think using a finger nail is obvious but its not so easy when I try it. If I put a morgan in and want to change the holder, I wanna be able to get it out!

Definitely don't put the Morgan in the Silver Eagle Capsule. Way too much movement - 2+mm difference in size. What's the Morgan worth that you have? Just buy a 5 pack from somebody so you keep them safe.

Some capsules are designed very difficulty. SAFE Coin Capsules actually have edges that are clear, but have rims so that you can actually stick your finger under and pry them back open. Not particularly easy as they shut nice and tight. But they definitely get open.

Good luck!

Thanks. The Morgan is in one but it won't move around much as it just sits in a display cabinet. Its not an expensive coin. Its work $32 or so, but its nice looking.

Not to hijack a forum, but when purchasing the air-tite capsules should you get the ones with the black ring inside of it or just a plain capsule?

Well, Florida, it is personal preference. Let's say you wanted to display cents and nickels together, having a uniform sized capsule with different foam inserts might look better.

Since it is all made for coins you don't have to worry about chemicals are what not.

Also to reiterate what has been said, the closer the better, and you can use an exacto knife to pop one open too.

I would suggest direct fit capsules always for long term storage.
