Alibaba, Chinas equivalent to ebay and Amazon is going public. Alibaba ships more volume than ebay and Amazon combined and handles every internet financial transaction in China. Who owns 24% of Alibaba? Yahoo So I ask, are we going to be able to have a Alibaba account much like an ebay account pretty soon? seems you can already though only if you have a Business.

I agree with justin. If they don't clean it up some I feel like that would not only be more hassle than it's worth but would probably do some damage to smaller sellers reputation being on there

The point I was trying to make is, will they be a competitor to ebay here in North America and Europe any time soon? When they clean up the fakes, which they will if they are going to make a push here, then maby we will see some competition for ebay

I doubt they'll be a serious competitor. ebay is massive and Amazon is probably the only one who could seriously try and knock them off anytime soon

Fusion is on the right track but not a trust worthy competitor for North America and Europe. As for China, this will go over big time!! Their population numbers of computer capable people is not even close to equal any where else. IMHO

Just look at the name: ALI BABA. The king of thieves, the guy who robbed thieves of their loot and put it in a cave, locked by a magic phrase that only he knew, probably the first pawn broker in oral tradition. They´re overtly telling you who they are; it´s not even a secret.

@Basebal21 its is already bigger than ebay and Amazon Combined, as in has bigger revenue and ships more goods than them both combined. Paypal is small potatoes in comparison to the ammount of money that goes through Alibaba Dont write them off so quick

24,000 employed at Alibaba, more than Yahoo and Facebook combined! They will be a great competitor to Amazon and ebay once establish here in the US.

Paypal is small potatoes in comparison to the ammount of money that goes through Alibaba That may be true but its only in markets where scams are common. That reputation isn't going to translate into widespread US or Canadian buying. The problem for them is you cant serve as a market for both. Either they have to clean it up alienating the base that got them to their size or they continue on with their reputation for fakes as far as coins are concerned. They may be able to chip away at some other ebay categories like clothing where people wouldnt necessarily care, but it would take an Amazon to take a run at the coins and currency section for people to start spending the type of money on them that they do on ebay. I wouldnt under estimate paypal either. ebay is still largely monetizing that not fully opening it up, but if they ever split it off and really opened it up its potential is huge. Hence one of their biggest investors has been trying to convince them to set it free. On a side note Amazon is apparently toying with the idea with both the saddle ridge hoard and some bigger dealers reporting they will start selling on there

In many categories yes, but in Numismatic I doubt Alibaba would be a competitor. As a buyer, I won't never buy items from China.

I already have an alibaba account. Sure as heck don't use it for coins though. Made 3 purchases so far. All in the <$10 range.
