I found this guy in a coin counter bag along with quite a few nice uncirculated nickels. I know that they did a matte proof this year and I was wondering if you guys thought this was one. It took a couple acetone dips to get some green funk off of it. That alone tells me that it was in a pvc holder/album.

As far as I know, there were no Matte Proofs struck in 1970. The only matte proofs in the Jefferson series are 1994 and 1997.

Over 238 Million nickels dated 1970-S were struck for circulation though. Your coin looks to be a circulation strike in about AU condition.

Not a proof, but a nice looking 1970-S Jefferson nickel.

Regardless of whether or not they actually made one that year, a matte proof might not have mirrored fields, but it should still have squared rims.
