Ya that CC Morgan really should have been at Ha.com.. 100%.. $2200 would have been very possible! For lower value things, ebay (-$500ish) is fine but for a CC morgan like that.... And that gold buffalo ha.com or another major venue is needed for maximum results. Please take the time to divide it all up in to series, and then by date and mint... List the type of coin, dates and mints In a list here in the appropriate section here and we'll be able to advise you as to your best route... Otherwise, unfortunately you can probably expect the losses you've experienced so far. And also, unfortunately when it comes time to sell coins, there's a very good chance that no matter what venue you use you'll loose some money... Unless they're insanely investment quality coins. If real that $5 Indian could be one of those, we'd need better pics but could most definitely tell... From what I'm seeing in the available pic I'm leaning towards fake though, but I surely wouldn't say for certain without better pics

Yes I will try my best to get the clearest closest pic of Indian head? Are you talking about the one in the maroon colored case or the $5 coin- the one in the round plastic protective cover?

The $5 one with the incuse Indian on the obverse and incuse eagle on the reverse. The $5 one is called an Indian head, it was a $5 circulating coin at it's time. The larger one in the maroon case is a gold buffalo, a new " bullion" coin not made for circulation. (But still worth more than a pretty penny in gold) it's called a "buffalo" opposed to an Indian because it's the design of the Buffalo nickel. Edit*** if those were just a few random coins I'm dying to see what else might be in there! For coins of this caliber it's definitely going to be worth your time to figure out exactly what you have and sell it at the right venue unless you want to take a serious price cut.... And take your time doing it.. Selling this as fast as you can will cut your potientally earnings a lot. And if you sell to a dealer you can probably expect 60% of retail or so depending.. Personally I wouldn't do it. And the wrong venue can result in a hit for all of them, as you found with the Morgan.. Lol, whomever bought that one got a great deal.... They're quite happy right about now...

Yes, we are Hamm. I don't think it's real because of how smooth the fields are.

Bummer Update-- while I was taking close up pics of the $5 coin I noticed the back of the coin has the word "COPY" too bad coins don't come $, $$, $$$, $$$$, and MEG*** Edited by Staff | The bad word filter is in place for a reason. Bypassing the filter and making the intended word obvious anyway is completely unacceptable. ***$$ stamped on it to show it's value. Would make life much easier for non coin enthusiast in a situation like myself. I have to say- it's getting more fun as I read up and learn more. My aunt always said "your uncle is a coin nut! " I think I know why he was....it can be addicting.

That's disappointing. The chances of it being gold is slim, but I'd try anyway I suppose

Lol, that's what I saw.... the word copy... I couldn't make it out enough to be certian though, I could see something there that wasn't right and had a huntch that was what it was... Bummer. I really wouldn't feel bad or let it discourage you though as that's such a rare coin that some collectors will buy a copy to fill a spot in their collection that wouldn't be obtainable otherwise. Good news is that the buffalo is worth a good chunk... And again I can't wait to see what other hidden jems are in there! That's quite the collection from what I've seen so far. And spending the time going through all those coins can definitely make a collector out of you, lol, that's how many of us on here got our starts as well, inherited collections, myself included...

Thank you all so much for your thoughts, suggestions and price/value on the select few coins I've posted. I like the fact this forum has enough traffic I don't have to wait days for a reply. A HUGE PLUS! You guys are super quick. I have printed this thread of replies so I will have a general idea. Thanks!

hammbone, reading all of this information overload being thrown at you let me say that there's certain experts you want to listen to and others who might be too new themselves to offer any real advice that has the decades of experience backing up a solid opinion. Suggest you investigate the best opinions that will bear the most fruit in your venture and not have you printing too much paper. I fall into the latter half myself as I only concentrate on one particular series and denomination of coinage so I am of no use to you hence my silence on this thread.
Superdave and a couple of others have offered the avenues you want to truly consider traveling in this as their combined exposure to the market is probably;y older than some of your coins and they certainly know how things work as they have witnessed your scenario a thousand times. Good luck to you

I can't think of an app for values (or at least a good one)... But numismedia.com is an excellant, free choice, you just have to remember that guides are just that.. Guides, and often the prices are on the high side. For a more exact way to find out the real world, up to date prices, searching completed Ha.com and other auction listings, or even ebay gives you an idea of the value right here and now. But to be able to get a price for a coin you need to have a general idea of the grade as for some series/dates there's insane price jumps between a single grade... So to help with grading US coins, pcgs photograde is a great option and will show examples of each series and a example of each grade. And there is an iPhone app for that
