I love my country as well but I just don't like the road the politicians are taking us down. My opinion of course. May God bless America.

I think perhaps the reason so many people admire US coins is that they are not tied down to having the monarch's head or a coat-of-arms on one side - so there is more free range for the designer.

Really? Only three British Monarchs have ever reached the 60 year of reign mark and that is almost unknown in other countries as well.
Lincoln 106 years
Jefferson 76 years
Roosevelt 68 years
Washington 82 years
Kennedy is the youngster at 51 years

I wish modern coins were as beautiful of the classic designs (Mercury Dime, Liberty Walking Half, Morgan dollar...). The US should return to the classic designs and make a point to never put a past President, or political effigy (e.g., Susan B. Anthony) on a coin...

I can see potential problems with changing our current money. Changing paper money would require a reprograming of every ATM in the US. Also, changing/eliminating the portraits on our currency would cause the "sensitive" people to cry out. For example, eliminating Lincoln would incite protest among African-American as some would see this as a pro-slavery initiative. Changing/Eliminating coin designs ( cent, nickel) would be far more viable as they would have some reasoning behind them, such as decreasing cost. Also, portraying the presidents on circulating currency goes against George Washington's initial wishes of not putting important figures on coins as this would seem to "monarchial." I realize depicting the presidents is a patriotic move, but so few people in the younger generation seem care about this nation's history that it seems pointless. I am in agreement of changing our money to that of classical designs as the current designs seem drab.

Every country in the world has to periodically deal with this, surely you can too!

As for South African coins... hmm.

I think the first Z.A.R. designs are quite nice... and the British lady-with-the-anchor shilling is a killer design. The shield and the springbok from that era, maybe a bit boring. Everything from 1961 to 1989 is fairly lame... but the modern commemoratives are very nice! Kind of hit-or-miss. Countries with more than one official language always have this problem, how to put words on coins that everyone can read. Usually they go the minimalistic route.
