Silver Surfer - I think perhaps the reason so many people admire US coins is that they are not tied down to having the monarch's head or a coat-of-arms on one side - so there is more free range for the designer. And the different interpretations of Liberty are interesting - and I for one like the modern circulating commemoratives like the 50 States Quarters and the Presidential dollars. I'm not so keen on current SA coins but I like those big George VI silver crowns!

I agree that American coins look very nice. The 18th/19th/early 20th century designs and commemoratives have a lot of charm. But modern American coins? Once you see the SAME coin designs for decades and decades (and a boring design at that) and the same obverse for 105 years (Lincoln cents), the president designs start to not look all that charming.....at all. ;)

I am a big fan of the designs on all the Eagles (ASEs, AGEs, APEs, the ATB Quarters (for the reverse designs), and Kennedy halves. @Matteproof I am with you about being tired of the designs of certain coins that have been around for decades. There are a lot of conversations about removing presidents from the obverses and returning to symbols that represent America and its ideals (freedom, liberty, etc.). I'm all for it and would prefer to see presidential appearances limited to commemeoratives or special one-to-two-year issues on circulating coinage. @silver surfer - I see your point. I just did a Google search for South African money and while maybe not spectacular, your coins look interesting to me because I've rarely seen them. However, your paper notes are far more interesting than U.S. paper money (with the possible exception of the newest $50 and $100 bills).

However, your paper notes are far more interesting than U.S. paper money I did the same, googled both coin and banknote designs, and my reaction is the same. (Although, I seem to be getting back into a foreign-over-US stance when it comes to my collecting habits over the past year or so) Love foreign stuff, so different than the run of the mill stuff we got here; even the Statehood Quarters, which were awesome at first, lost my interest...at least the ATB Quarters have more interesting designs (but I can't get over the even flatter depiction of Washington on them) But that might be why you love US coins so much...since they're so different.

Because taxpayer money is wasted to keep a staff of designers and engravers on hand for the USMint and BEP. Thus the reason the 50 states and ATB Quarters were created was to keep those peoiple having jobs to make an excuse for having them on the payroll at the taxpayer expense. 1946~2014 and the dime has had ZERO changes except in metal content. This is how it should be, but those designers must keep their paychecks so they must make something, and for what they get paid they beter make it look %#$* good!
