A while back I purchased a lot of Kennedy 40%'ers and until now I haven't bothered to look at them. I found this one exceptional. Any ideas why this one has such a different finish to it than any others I've seen? Thank you for your replies!

I originally thought that a polishing may be the case, but no matter how hard I try to polish an identical year/mint coin, it is nothing like this one.

I will now have to agree as I compared it to a 1999-S. Thank you ! Any other opinions?

If the coin was polished then why would the person who did it just release it?

A couple years ago my wife brought home 2 1967 Kennedy half dollars that someone spent in her store which look just like this one. Like they could be proof (but obviously not). I always wondered how they got so nice.

Look st the date and any "circles" and you will see residue in them.
Also almost all the way around the rim appears to be the same sort of residue.

The coin has an average amount of bag marks on them, so I would think unless it was picked right from a bag that the coin should show a little less luster.

From the pics provided, it doesn't look normal. IF it is a real strong strike, on the obverse and reverse it could have been a cleaned out die and a nice shiny planchet combo.

Sure some one could have taken a buffing pad or hand polished it.

Look for residue in other cracks and valleys.

Its a tough call without coin in hand.

You tube has a video of some guy using a polishing paste and a dremmel and making a XF Kennedy half look like its Proof65.
People get bored.
Not all coins that appear polished are polished. All it takes is a few good shiny planchets and a few good hammerings from the dies and the Kennedy half could look almost proof like.

Wrights Silver Polish, availble at most hardware stores... I've seen these before and I've also seen coins that were polished using a brass polisher the one ammo reloaders use... Still worth its silver content.. I agree people get bored

The video on polishing coins was interesting. He made them super shiny. My half dollars are not that shiny. They just look like a regular proof coin (IMO).
