Hi I bought this coin 1908 S gold Indian Head its my fist gold coin in possession so the big question is.. it it real? I don't have a scale that would be able to weight grams so I'm not sure what the weight is. The edges around the coin seem rough, I tried inspecting it visually through a jewelers loupe but everything seems fine.

From the photos I don't see anything that jumps out to me that indicates that it's fake. Have you also tried to see if it sticks to a magnet?

I have no expertise in this coin series so I offer no opinion on authenticity ...

Hopeful for you that our true experts are able to judge this coin by the images [provided.

This coin is definitely not authentic. When I first saw the small pics, I thought the surfaces were severely whizzed and potentially an ex-jewlry piece at least as the coin had vf-ish details, but also appeared to reflect light similar to a coin with cartwheel luster(usually this means it has been whizzed). The details are really mushy. Now with the new pics, I can tell that the date is not even close. The whole look of the coin is off. I will try to get some pics of my 1908-s up later. I'm sorry. The coin still could be gold, but I doubt it. If it is, at least you have gold value. The first step to determining that is to weigh it and measure the dimensions.

Rest in Peace

Here is a comparison of the date between yours and my NGC AU53 1908-s example. You can see that the structure is completely different, as the genuine one is more outlined.

If you can return this coin to the person you bought it from, please do so immediately...take my picture with you if you'd like and need proof.

great job Johnny, wow. I just checked all of my Indian Heads and none of the dates look like the OPs coin.

A few thoughts if I may:

get cotton gloves. had it been real, the way you're handling the coins with your fingers and hands is not what a Numismatist does and you compromise the value of the coin and its surfaces
get a scale
get a caliper
don't buy raw gold until you know what you're doing

good luck

Matt, I know this is very frustrating, especially being your first gold coin. About 6 years ago, when I first started collecting gold, I purchased a $3 gold piece off of ebay that was inside of a bezel. I clipped off the soldered bezel to get a better look at the whole coin, and then posted it on the forums. It was indeed a counterfeit, and what was worse...since I removed it from the bezel, I could no longer return it in the condition I bought it. Even worse, when I explained this to the seller and told him I still wanted to return it, he accused me of trying to "switch coins" on him, and left me negative feedback. I filed a case with ebay, but could only get my money back if I returned it in the condition I bought it. I even went as far as buying another bezel for the coin so I can properly return it, but they sent me the wrong size....and the whole thing just turned into a huge mess, and I was out over $600. I was really frustrated, almost completely turned me away from coin collecting......but instead, I decided to do some research, learned more about Counterfeit Detection, and stuck to certified gold for a while, and now it is my favorite thing to collect. $5 Indians are heavily counterfeited, and many of the fakes are much better than this example, to the point that they would fool many dealers. Being your first gold, it is essential that you only buy these certified by PCGS, NGC, ANACS or ICG. I really hope you can return this coin, and put that money into a certified example. to the boards Matt, and I really hope that you don't give up on this awesome collectable area!! We are all here to support and encourage you, and try to answer your questions.
