I'm not sure. The dot doesn't look quite the same as the one in Snow's guide and another I saw on Heritage.

Nice Eye Raymo. I'm not sure if that's it though. The date is really close, but with slight differences. It's hard to tell, could be just a trick of the camera.

I offered him ten bucks just to get a look at it but he wouldn't budge. I would love to find a nice one someday.

I don't blame you on that. Personally I'd pass on it. too. Keep looking I'm sure there are some out there.

I do not think it is the S-16. The S-16 is barley visible on UNC graded 1875s. for this coin to show something that bold in the condition it is in, I would say it is something else.

The date position is slightly different. The "1" is slightly ahead of the bust point on the S-16

Is is definitely the same reverse die, but a different obverse die. I just compared the two dates side-by-side and see that the 1 is just slightly farther away from both the 8 and the bust. An S-16 it is not. So close, but no cigar.

Does anyone know if the S 16 really can;t be obtained in circulated condition? One poster said it must be UNC. I can;t imagine that one in AU would already be missing the knob on the N.

Here is one I watched that is in AU condition. Looks like many others saw this too. This variety is overvalued in my opinion. There is a cool story behind the variety, but for the money, I would rather buy a nice doubled die or error coin. Since this is a newly discovered variety (last few years), I suspect more will be found and the price will come down a bit. http://www.ebay.com/itm/19119231180...RK:MEBIDX:IT

I think you are right on that. Since the seller did not describe this variety it was probably a surprise for him that the price was so ridiculously high!

Maybe they didn't get what they wanted for it.
