A store near me is selling American silver (including Peace dollars) for the suspiciously low price (for Canada!) of $22 per dollar. One of the Peaces looks like there's no wear on it (1922, I forget the mint mark). I don't yet have a Peace dollar so I was enthralled - but I decided to do a bit of reading first. Even if I'm wrong and it turns out to be high AU or something, is this worth swinging by and picking up at that price tomorrow?

22 isn't too bad, but with prices moving downwards, I don't see any rush to buy.

I'm talking about it in its condition (most likely UNC).

I have been disappointed in the past when I bought a (cleaned!!) Columbian half for $20 and found out that even in the higher XF grades it isn't worth much more than melt. It seems like American coins are either really cheap and unwanted or really expensive and desirable, so from now on I ask before buying!

If it's truly uncirculated, it's not a bad deal... but if you can't identify a cleaned coin or lightly circulated coin as opposed to a true MS, I wouldn't bother buying it, personally. Peace dollars are one of the most difficult series of US coins to grade.

Bear in mind that the Canadian $1 is currently trading at a 9% discount against the US $1. Also, consider that the Canadian dealer may charge sales tax, GST? Best to consider these factors before spending too much.

Of course, if we're only talking about one coin, and you like the grade for the price, buy it! IMHO, silver dollars will eventually rise in value, and the downside is minimal; this, considering how long inflation continues to loom on the horizon.

Sometimes a seller will look at his inventory and find material that he's got money tied up in and isn't selling.
That's when he'll REALLY lower the price just to get some operating capital.

Went out and got it - was actually $20.50 Canadian ($18.80 USD). Not bad...
