Hi all, I'm new to the forum and know very little coins but I was hoping to tap in to your knowledge and experience.
I've come across a rather odd 5 pence piece and I'm hoping whether anyone had seen one of these before?
The coin seems to be minted off center on both sides (towards top right on the front, top left on the back), the image is whole though and the ring of dots is complete.
The coin is very marginally large than a normal 5 pence piece (~1mm)but the edges are still smooth so I wonder if this explains the difference.
I would normally presume this was a fake, but do fakes exist for such a low value coin. Also, the quality seems too high, the images are identical to normal coin and the orientation is correct.
What you do think? I will try to sort some photos soon.
Many thanks in anticipation, Gary

I would have thought only known rares of low denominations are counterfeited. (surely the fakes need to be circulated/sold at a profitable price)
I've a couple of £2's that have the center beads intact on one side and almost gone on the opposing side.

Welcome I'm pretty new round these parts as well and I'm a pre decimal collector, but if you post up a couple of pics I'm sure someone will be able to provide the info you are seeking. Good luck

No worries but I'm not sure to be truthful - what do you mean by evenly milled? The imprint seems to be applied evenly on both sides if that's what you mean!

By the looks of it, and by the smooth edge description, I would say it has missed the milling process. It's somewhat similar to my Partial Collar 5p (2003) in this thread; https://goccf.com/t/144484although mine jumped/slipped out of the holding collar when struck, whereas yours missed the collars entirely. (I think that's what happens :S) So in short, not a fake, but a curious and collectable error.

are the lines on the edge of the coin still there?, is the edge smooth all around the coin?

Ah right, no there are are no lines at all. As RED has since said it seems to have missed this process completely. Does anyone know how common this type of error is? Also would the miss centering be related (ie the cause) why its missed the milling process?
Interesting to see your example RED, thanks for sharing. I'm glad its not a fake!
Thanks
