I noticed that someone has a 1933 one penny (George V) up for sale on ebay. Apparently these are rather rare - only 7 in existence. Bid is already over £50. Is there an easy way to spot if this a fake? edit: added url Edited by Zwirko 05/09/2014 1:37 pm

I would take it as a safe bet "London to a brick on" that the ownership of all of them is established and known by all of the leading auction houses.
The SELLER of this item would need to be VERIFIED before even considering a bid.
My assumption is that this particular piece has an altered date. The fact that is is worn makes me suspicious. I cannot confirm if any of the genuine 1933 British pennies were accidentally released into circulation, but without further research, I would suggest that none were, in fact, released into circulation

Thanks, interesting. I thought the last three looked a bit off, hard to tell from the photo though. Bid is over £600 now, so someone is going to be stung. Earlier today there was a spot on the Paul O'Grady Show about one of these coins going for £80,000 or so - which made me have a quick check on ebay. If other folks watched that also and the same idea, well...

It looks very good evenly worn and toned. There's defiantly a lot of interest ! There's another one lower down at £90 DDD, 23 bids . Does look a bit more suspect.

£770 now! Odd profile as well, nothing else for sale. An antique shop owner I know has one but it is definaley a fake. I'll get a photo of it....this is the holy grail of penny's no?

Certainly a lot of interest now. I wonder how much of that is being driven by the fact that one of these coins was featured on that TV show I mentioned? A bit of a fishy coincidence that another one would be on ebay at the same time.

Now over the 1,000 mark, with 70 bids.

It couldn't be a retooled 1938. That would be George VI and not George V.

I noticed something when I looked at that page. Look what the seller put at the bottom...
"On 07-May-14 at 22:58:50 BST, seller added the following information: Not sure if genuine as I've read a lot of fakes about"

It looks like a two bidder auction war and one only has a feedback rating of 4.
I wonder if they saw the seller's note.
That's a lot of money ($1700 U.S.) for something even the seller says may not be real.
