This is one I got from chrsmat71. I can not fine the before pics currently. I misplaced the sd card they are on. I can not figure out where to start for iding this. I think it has enough left to figure it out. I know the pictures aren't great, but can you guys give me a poke in the right direction like if it is Greek or Roman. I want to try to figure it out myself, but have no clue where to start.

The side with the face I believe says you SPI ( I can make the sp out clearly) (update: I believe the you is actually a IV)

The other side looks to have letters in the green above the person, but I can't make it out, and it possible has a horse falling to the right? (update: actually I think it might be a fallen horseman reverse)

Thanks for all assistants, please refrain from telling me directly what it is if you know until I have a chance to try to figure it out myself.

I really wish I had a macro lens or extension tubs.

With MetDet71 thoughts I have done more looking. I think it is either

Alexandria RIC VIII 84 http://wildwinds.com/coins/ric/cons...viii_084.jpg

or

Antioch RIC VIII 190 http://wildwinds.com/coins/ric/cons...viii_190.jpg

I am basing this off of I can clearly see an M in the left field. Also the smaller detail I can see is the spear is going into the fallen horsemen wrist, and the way the knee is lifted.

Here are the before pictures

Looks like a FEL TEMP REPARATIO, Constantius II.

I think your right. It has an M in the left field, so that means it is 1 of 9 going by this page http://wildwinds.com/coins/ric/cons...us_II/i.html

The reverse is clearly 90 degrees to much clockwise. Basically needs turn 90 degrees counter clockwise to make it correct I believe.

according to helvetica's spreadsheets a left field M is either julian ii or constantius ii, so you definitely constantius ii (tivs pf avg). I'm not sure beyond that. no mint mark visible in hand?

Where would the mint mark be chrsmat71? Is it below the soldier on the ground?

If that is where it would be at I can't make anything out. Do you think socking it in more distilled water would be able to pull any more detail out, or is it as good as it going to get?

i don't know BP, it probably isn't going to clean up much more. sometimes that black stuff comes off...soemtimes it doesn't...or isn't worth the effort (which is probably the case here). you've done pretty well, I didn't know if you'd even be able to ID the emperor/type on those I sent you.

Thanks, I will try letting it sock a bit, and see if I can get it to come out. This was the only one that I was able to get much detail off of. I wish I could find the sd card with the before pics. I am glad it was only my 2gb card I misplaced. I am a semi-professional photographer (portraits and weddings and such) so I am glad it was one of my big ones or important ones. I know it is here somewhere, lol.

This process has really got me interested in ancients though, and I might start collecting the ones I like here and there. The history is amazing.

Found the before pictures. YEA!

It was really good of chrsmat71 to hand out some coins, I hope everyone gives him a big thank you. I have just sent a few to a young lad in the states. He sent me a message telling me about how he has been learning about the Romans in school and wanted some for under a few dollars. I managed to check out he was who he claimed and sent him a nice bunch to get him started (foc). It's nice to be nice, top man chrsmat71, I take my hat off to you sir, a credit to the forum and the World in general!
