Not often I get a coin of this grade (reverse only unfortunately) from a bulk bag.  You will never soar like an eagle if you hang around with turkeys.....

This is the obverse, wondering if I can clean it up any.  You will never soar like an eagle if you hang around with turkeys.....

That is a gorgeous reverse. A little suprised by the obverse. Not terrible, May clean a lil bit

Beautiful!  I think that is celanable! My favourit Crispus (I cleaned it!):   "Sirmium (Sremska Mitrovica), 324-325 AD. Obv. FL IVL CRISPVS NOB CAES, laureate head right. Rev. ALAMANNIA DEVICTA, Victory advancing right, holding trophy on right arm, branch in left, spruning captive right on ground. Ex. (dot)SIRM." |

Nice job but I don't fancy poking at this too much, all the detail is there. If both sides were the same I would have a go at it. I don't fancy soaking it either, would be a shame to alter the reverse.

I got something very similar. a beautiful reverse, with an obverse to match, but the person cleaned it with acid and went too far on the obverse. Pity, but there you go.

I might try and soak the obverse and keep the reverse dry. Sounds a bit iffy but I can probably rig something up involving string and a web coin holding device  You will never soar like an eagle if you hang around with turkeys.....

I often clean coins, and my favourit is scraping the dirt with small careful circular movements! My tool is a half nail scissors!  I cleaned that Crispus this way too, and the silvering is still on the coin!   Edited by Baltas

If you soak in distilled water and don't rub the reverse, it should be fine.

I think if you lightly use a dental tool you would be able to pick off most of the crust.

You haven't seen my hand control! If I pass someone a can of pop by the time I give it them it's been shaken so much they have to wait 10 minutes before they can open it.
