Found this nice little coin in a box that's been lying around unnoticed for 20 odd years. My coin evaluation skills aren't great - I thought this one would maybe be some kind of very good? One side seems better than the other though. Thoughts?

I'd grade this between VG-10 and F-12. I don't have much experience grading Shield nickels though so I could be off. -MV

I do not own any Shield nickel or good at grading coins but going by the book VF20.

Very nice coin, I'll grade it F-15. Do you realize that this coin is a DDO, or Doubled-Die Obverse? I can see the doubling on the shield even from your pictures. Check out this photo of the FS-05-1872-101 (007), which is a fancy name for a certain variation of the 1872 DDO. (Image courtesy of shieldnickels.net)According to my CherryPickers' Guide, this DDO in F-12 is worth $95, and in VF-20 it jumps to $125, so you have quite a valuable coin there, partner!

Hard to judge from the pics (scans?). I would go VF20 tentatively without better shots.

Thanks for all the replies. Re the " DDO". I'm not 100% sure what I'm looking for. Here's another picture with some arrows pointing at what I imagine I'm supposed to be seeing - sort of like another edge?

The description in my guide for your DDO states that "moderate doubling is evident on the annulet, cross, leaves, and shield, with the secondary image south-southeast of the primary image". The easiest way to tell if a Shield nickel is a DDO is to look at the annulet, or the small circle at the bottom of the cross. I noticed even on your first round of pics that there was a secondary circle underneath the first. However, I'm used to seeing normal Shield nickels, so it really stood out to me. Here is a close up picture of a normal nickel for comparison.

I see it now - it's very noticeable after looking at a normal coin.
Somehow this coin found its way from the USA to Scotland (where I am) during the early 20th century, ending up in a box of coins my grandparents gave me many moons ago.
