I'm considering submitting my pre-1933 $20 St. Gaudens coins (MS63) for a possible crossover to PCGS from NGC. Not sure if it's worth it...Have heard that PCGS slabs bring more, and are easier to sell. When considering all costs involved (membership, shipping, handling fees, premium charges, grading fees), I figure it would run about $54 per coin. I bought these at a steep discount, saving me several thousand dollars.

Do I just be thankful I bought at such a favorable discount? Or do I have a little fun with this and see what happens with a possible crossover? I'm in a state of quandary because I recognize NGC as one of the top two TPG's. And yet I have room to have,...some fun!javascript:insertsmilie('')

And, yes, I'm very much a new guy! javascript:insertsmilie('')

To be honest to tell you if its worth it wed have to see pictured of said coins to determine if you'd get a higher grade or not.

to the CCF. Pleased to have you here with us.

There are two reasons IMHO when a cross-over from NGC to PCGS might be worth the cost ...

1. You are faced with selling the coins and wish to realize the higher value the current market places on PCGS graded coins ... not judging if this is right or wrong ... just stating market facts.

2. You enjoy the PCGS registry set idea and wish to add the coins to your set.

Otherwise ... NGC coins are fully respected as an honest and accurate TPG and IMHO there is no reason to spend the money to cross them over to PCGS.

Would enjoy seeing some photos of your St Gaudens.

If your Saint is a common date there is no reason at all to cross it. Common date MS63 Saints are a dime a dozen with minimal premiums over melt regardless of grading company. If you have a key date (or much better date) then there might be some room for discussion. What date is it?

They're common date Gaudens! They're serving my purpose for now, and may have opened my eyes to a new area of interest! Thanks for your input!

Pleased to have stumbled on this forum! ... Cheers!

As a slab collector I would ask you why do you want to crossover from PCGS to NGC? For me I want all of my coins in PCGS slabs and have crossed a few from ANACS and NGC to PCGS with better than normal results (most recent were two laterals (small white slabs) and one downgrade (current yellow slab) from ANACS). I have read somewhere that the crossover success rate "to PCGS" is not very good...somewhere around 50%.

If you just want a Saint in a NGC slab, I would agree with the aforementioned, sell you PCGS Saint and buy one in NGC plastic. You never know, you may find a nicer one out there.

I have a few NGC coins that I've contemplated in crossing over to PCGS but I think there is a chance that they will be downgraded as I have seen it happen to another forum member so I don't think it's worth the risk.Anyway NGC is well respected so my advice would be to leave them as they are

If you are submitting them for CROSSOVER just make sure you don't specify "cross at any grade". If you don't make that they will not be cracked out unless they will grade at least at the grade shown on the NGC holders. If they would grade lower at PCGS you will just get them back in the original NGC holder.

If you crack them out and just submit them for grading then all bets are off.

The PCGS current crossover % is 38% for the last year and 44% the last month - you can find them on their site. I did this - crossover - for the first time recently and was lucky enough to get 3/4. Both NGC's crossed, 1/2 ANACS. I submitted them as "CURRENT" meaning don't downgrade! They don't publish how many of the 38% were downgrades but if that is total then some of the 38% were! I believe I saw somewhere that the % that get upgraded ( this is possible but unlikely ) is like 0.2%. Be happy if you cross, like 1/500 get a + or higher than current.

As has been said, make sure and designate "CURRENT" as min grade on the submission form to not get downgraded - as it usually loses you too much value - depending on grade and coin etc!

I am ecstatic with my 3/4, but I won't likely do it again. I'd rather just buy all PCGS and avoid the hassle.
