I know many don't care about the TPG's inflated retail price listings, but I have noticed a rather dramatic shift in NGC's list ever since they and numismatics aren't "the same" anymore.

NGC has pushed a number of their lists up to be close to PCGS list prices now. I keep track of both, as well as a number of others, for the coins on my LISTS. The last fews weeks to a couple months have seen a lot of shifts. I don't see that auction prices are up that dramatically tho!

At the end of the day, are the only prices that matter the auction prices?

IMO, NO. Some auction buyers go berserk and pay WAY MORE than even the inflated TPG retail for some coins. Or some toned coins can throw auction prices out of whack.

Some dealers and many buyers BELIEVE in the FMV prices listed by the TPGs. I don't, but that some do means it is prudent to look at them. Plus they do have some historical info on their prices that you have to pay for elsewhere.

Some dealers on ebay pretty much set their prices by the TPG's list. I rarely pay much attention to them because that is inflated IMO but they set them there like clockwork.

I use many inputs to comprise what I feel is a reasonable current FMV. Only using one is rather narrow and IMO prone to skewing.

Market price is what a seller and a buyer are willing to pay at any given time. If supply & demand, popular fascination, etc... drive prices up or down, then that is the current fair market value (people make "stupid" deals all the time). Just because people base fair market value off a published list, I don't think said lists are enough to drive prices in and of themselves. I think their are too many educated people like you, and other posters on the forum, that will establish prices on their own based on their experiences and expectations (experiences that factor in past sales, advertised prices, etc...).

Perhaps NGC's prices were always "low" and this correction merely brings them to the "normal" (or inflated) market level. I don't know.

You can count on that. There is AU in those evenly toned coins.
