I'm going to New York for the long weekend and I want to know which American coins to keep. A couple that I know to keep are S mints and the occasional silver or proof (although I doubt I'll be seeing these in 3 days). Also out of mint stuff like LWCs. I'm also trying to complete a set of State Quarters which is not the easiest thing to find in rolls here. If I get the chance I'll go to a bank and buy a roll or two of halfs to look at. Do they sell rolls of Ikes? If yes, how much do they cost? Can you find $2 bills in circulation? I'll get 5 from the bank too otherwise. Did I miss anything? Thanks

Any qquarters or dimes 1964 or older, any halfs 1969 or older, but you will probably not see any of those. 2 dollar bills I rarely ever see in circulation but you can buy them from banks. You can still find old nickels in circulation. I think you're beat bet for finding anything good in change would be to look for die varieties.

If you took about $100 to $150 in fave value, you probably could complete a set of the State Quarters up to 2008. While technically not State Quarters, the US territories and District of Columbia quarters would be much tougher to complete from circulation in limited time. As the previous poster said, any water and die pre-1965. Also wheat cents or nickels pre-1960 a lot of people like to hold on to. AU or MS 1982 and 1983 coinage might be a good target since there were no uncirculated mint sets issued in those years. It depends on the bank, but many don't carry rolls of halves. Have to hope they might have some loose ones. There might be cent varieties, like the 1970-s small date.

I can't take a lot of coins since it's basically a walking tour with school friends and we take a bus there and back. I can take a few rolls in my bag but that's all I can take. Maybe when I shop I'll just ask them to give me change in coins instead of bills, just to increase my chances of getting something I think doesn't look ordinary. Anything ordinary I spend.
Do you know which banks have rolls of halves?

If you are just here for the long weekend: Sat/Sun/Mon you had better make the bank stop first thing Saturday morning. In most places they will close about noon and not open again until Tuesday morning.

That's quite unfortunate, I'm only free on Sunday 10 AM - 2 AM and after 8PM. I'll just see what I can get then.

If you are staying at a hotel ask at reception if their bank is open on Saturday and which branch, some only have one branch open for short hours on Saturday. Ask at stores and gas stations, just grab a roll here and there, If you do get to a bank they may hassle you about not having an account, and then say they can't get any more change because the vault is locked. The Biggest problem is turning it back into paper to buy more change, with limited time you will either have to hang onto all of it, or take a % hit from a coin star machine. If you are with a large enough group you might be able to sell off some to other people you are with for more paper money. Here is a break down of rolls (at a rough guess boxes are in the range of 15-22+ pounds, 10kg) Cents - $0.50 per roll - $25.00 per box Nickel - $2.00 per roll - $100.00 per box Dimes - $5.00 per roll - $250.00 per box Quarters - $10.00 per roll - $500 per box Half's - $10.00 per roll - $500 per box Small Dollar - $25.00 per roll, I've never done a box and don't know, but no silver from them. Ike Rolls... sorry, people with weeks of time on there hands and dozens of banks to check have had little to no luck finding these, they would be $25.00 to a roll thou. Sounds like you will be on foot with limited time and resources, I'd say walk down the street in one direction and hit a few stores, ask for a few rolls of each kind and see what they have in their till. head back to the hotel with pockets full, sort them quick and take the quarters with you down the other side of the street, and exchange them for more rolls at different places. I say quarters because they are easiest to count up large amounts and not have the clerk get too mad at you. Take dimes and nickels too, the cents might get to be too much but if a clerk is running out of dimes they will kiss your feet for a roll's worth, even if they have to count it all. Sounds like a lot of work but finding a bank open on the weekend to grab rolls from is not easy Good Luck with it and let us know how it turns out

Thanks Aslan! I don't think I'll get a box. I've never gotten any box except for a penny box, and that's very time consuming to look through. Not to mention heavy to carry. I'll just get a few rolls. Great idea, I'll see if there's a bank in the hotel where I could get rolls. But do the banks really not want to serve you if you have no account there? Do stores actually have rolls of change? I suppose they won't be mad though if I ask after I bought something first and it's not too busy. No harm asking. Hi frodo, I mostly collect Canadian coins, even though I keep the odd British and other countries' coins that I find in rolls. I have found a lot of LMCs in Canadian penny rolls. I don't really know much about them other than that they have a lot of die varieties, so they're tucked in a couple of rolls in my drawer now. About specific coins, I'm finding State Quarters, I'm trying to get all 50 of them. Not very easy to do here since there's usually only 1 US quarter in a roll and it's not always a State Quarter. Never found an ATB Quarter in a roll, though I have one given from a friend.

I'm not sure how many hotels have banks in them, I meant the bank that the hotel uses, but stores get their coins in rolls from banks. If you stop at a gas station on the way in ask there. If you are going to an event center, sports, science fair, etc. they will have rolls at the concession stands and admission. Like you said "No harm asking." the problem comes when you have no paper left and have to count it out to get more. If you are in a busy store maybe asking to talk to a manager or going to customer service would be better than holding up the check out, but if you see they have a bunch of rolls, No harm asking

Just the first day spent most of the time on the bus and I've found several keepers already. 10 Washington quarters, the oldest being *dramatic drumroll* 1965. Close but no silver. Also trying if I could get all the years. 8 State Quarters, 6 of which I haven't seen before. A 1971D dime from a VLDS. I'll keep it as a curio. A 1965 cent. I like the high relief on these old coins. When I but something, I ask the clerk if they could give my change all in coins as long as it's not too big (below $3).

I got 26 State Quarters last I counted. First 20 was pretty easy but it seemed to stall after that, I kept getting the same quarters again and again. Change machines are fun, I just want to keep putting dollar bills in there to see what I can get. No silver, but it looks like 1965 really likes me. I didn't find antything worth keeping on Saturday, but Sunday was great! Went to Central Park and the American Museum of Natural History. I got a 1981 $20 from change buying my ticket in. I received it back side up, I was hoping it had a red seal on it since it looks kind of different. I was a bit disappointed when it's green and said FRN, but the old date makes up for it. I have to "hunt" to get a 1986 bill in Canada, and this bill was handed to me just like that! Then as a souvenir I bought a token/medal, I love the warm looking finish and I just had to buy it. I got a wheatie in my change! I had to turn it over to make sure my eyes weren't tricking me seeing a 1950-something date. 1956 I think, I'll check later. Also bought a token from a toy store the front is from a Morgan dollar and the back is a large eagle. But instead of saying "United States of America", it says "Golden State Mint 1 ounce .999 Fine Copper". The quality of the strike isn't very good and I don't know if it's actually copper, but if it is I overpaid so much because it was $15. I didn't know what I was paying for when I bought it. Oh well, live and learn. At least I'm sure it's not plastic. Then I picked up a red-brown 1981 cent abandoned in a corner on Bleeker Street. Asked my friend to hold on to it for me since he has deep pockets. When we were buying lunch, he got a 1940-something wheatie in his change! Lucky! Then there's someone I know who doesn't like coins, and he needed $2 in cash. He traded his handful of change for my $2, and there's a wheatie in there plus two State Quarters that I don't have! It totals to $2.60, so it's a real steal. Then I saw 2 obvious zincolns, shields up, on the road in Time Square. I didn't bother picking them up. After all it only says "pick up a penny, give you luck all day". Nothing about more than one, so I'm not risking it since it might be bad luck coins. I'm not usually superstitious, but I've been finding out that superstitions about coins are pretty much true, like carrying a silver sixpence is lucky, and it is. And about that 1981 cent I picked up, we both forgot that he was holding it and returned it to me the next day. And in that time he's also managed to find a 1949 Jeff. Looks too much to be a coincidence? I didn't manage to go to a bank or a coin shop since the tour has a pretty tight schedule. I did see one coin shop but it was closed because it was Saturday night. Wanted to get a proof ASE because I don't want the hassle of customs when mailing. Doesn't really matter anyway, since I had fun Sorry no pics, I will try to get some up this afternoon and the rest tonight, but no guarantees.
