Is there a way to know how many of a certain coin the US mint will produce?

Since finding out that the 2012 silver Kennedy halves are selling for over $100 now because of their low mintage (300,000+), I'm trying to find out how many 2014 Kennedys will be minted.

I think, from what I read on the US mints website, that 195,000 have been produced so far. Is it impossible to get a number until the minting of the coin has stopped. Would it be illegal to try to find out - like an insider trading sort of thing?

Scott.

If we knew in advance we'd all be rich. Unfortunately the best you have to go on is how many ahve been produced to day and make your best guesstimate. The only other hope is coming across a news article which might provide some insight to some of the decision making within the mint.

Generally, the only coins with mintage limits are commemoratives with maximum mintages built into the authorizing legislation. Everything else is minted to demand so mintages can vary by quite a bit. Release time can affect mintages as well, issues that go on sale later in the year can end up with a lower mintage than the same product that went on sale four months earlier in the previous calendar year. The US Mint does release weekly sales figures so that is only hard data you have to rely on.
