So I just found this in a junk box, and it would be a nice example of a Tokugawa-era Japanese mon, but it has been clipped on each side. So it is more square now than circular. Has anyone seen anything of the like before? Is this just from someone clipping metal, or would Japanese moneyers have done this for some reason? Thanks!

There's no reason why moneyers would have done that. It's post-mint damage.

As for why anyone else would do that, one can only speculate. Perhaps they needed a piece of metal to fit into a certain space, and a coin happened to be a handy piece of metal. Or perhaps htey needed something of a specific weight and trimmed it until the weight was what they needed.
