I just picked up this rather nice Irish penny of King Henry III from 1216-72. I know very little about my coin, so any info would be appreciated! And about what kind of value would you assign to my piece? Thanks

hmm, I suppose that I am not alone in my lack of knowledge of this type of coin.

should this have been posted in the ancient coin forum?

The actual boundaries of the last ancient coins and the earliest medieval coins could generate a good discussion.
However, this coin is much later than the latest commonly accepted boundary.

It's not an ancient coin.

It's a medieval coin.

Pertinax- Sure, it certainly is medieval. But I do find that medieval coins seem to fall between the cracks in this forum. But the ancient folks tend to be a bit more in the know about esoteric pieces such as these.

Medieval rocks!
This penny is a type IIIa, and the moneyer is RICARD ON DIVE, for Richard at Dublin, although the dies for these coins were all made in London, and shipped to Dublin. The obverse appears to be a die match with this example from the Irish Coinage website:

philadelphian- Also, I paid $120 for mine. Do you think that I did OK? IT seems like most go for much more than that on ebay.

I think you did well.

I think £100-110 is about the right retail value.
