Hey everyone Hope you are all going well Just in need of some opinions on the following coin I have been interested in making an offer on it for a while but just wanted a few second opinions. Fits all my criteria that I have been looking for in my first ancient Lifetime Alexander III (Great) (325bc-315BC), Pella Mint and in EF with a beautiful tone in my view. Thanks in advance P.s. It is a price 210 for anyone wondering

One question guys and gals what price would be good for a piece like this? Btw just looked back and saw I may have confused a few of you the attribution is price 210 unfortunately that isn't its price in dollars that I'd have to pay. Btw on the your opinions on the value could you specify it in USD cause of the exchange rates and all that I'd have to pay from being in Australia.
Thanks everyone for the help it is greatly appreciated
On a side note could someone please tell me about the basilious title on some of the tetradrachms I have heard it was a one year type but what year was it and which mints did it?

When you said price 210 I did think it was what you where going to pay. It didn't dawn on me at the time you were giving the price reference number. Anyway based on condition and considering that it's a life time issue. I would say right around $300 would be the most I would pay.
From what I have read the coins that have the legend of Basilious were struck after Alexanders death, but this may have only applied to bronze issues and not silver.

When you get it home, I hope you will "set it free" ....
For what it is worth, I am currently reading a little booklet by Harold Mattingly entitled "Coins and Travels in Greece". Page 24 under "Coin Portraits" he says:
The first portraits found on Greek coins are not of Greeks but of Persians such as Tisaphernes or Pharnabazas, the Persian governors (satraps) who by supporting Sparta destroyed the power of Athens between 412 and 404 BC.These governors proclaimed themselves representatives of the great king of Persia by using the inscription BAS for basileus (king) on the reverse of their coins. After the Persian coins and before the reighn of Alexander the Great, portraits are found only on a coin issued by the rulers of Lycia, a state which ay in south western Asia-Minor.
Te first true Greek coin portraits show the successors of Alexander the Great. After his death in 323BC his descendants divided his empire between them.......

Its hard to be completely certain just from the photo but I think anything under $600 would be a good price as it is nicely toned and EF. You could easily pay $1000 retail for an Alex Tetradrachm in this condition.

ha! I knew it was price 210. (the reference) haha. I think Echizento is being a bit conservative. It is a nice full flan coin, the lifetime issues are usually on a tighter flan, much like mine. I think if your under $500 you got a good deal if your under $700 your ok. If you pay $1000 then you paid retail. The fact that it is slabbed is a bonus for the coin. Although NGC does not gantry authenticity of ancients, its always good that a coin has been reviewed by a team of professionals, especially if your just starting out. I agree you should make and effort to acquire the piece. It really is a must have for and ancient collection.

The coin it self sold for $1080usd earlier this year and after postage, exchange rates and tax (gst on imports of 10%)it is going to cost a pretty penny and frankly it is A a very nice example, B it was minted in Pella (think only 15 of the tetradrachms were minted in pella), C of those minted in Pella few were lifetime strikes and it is an Alexander the Great Tetradrachm, might as well go D too and say it has an awesome tone too plus no problems would surely be a bonus.
Thoughts?

I would pay 7 or 8 hundred $ but beyond that I would want a free Christmas turkey plus all the trimmings with it. Your call though pal, if you like it, buy it. As long as your collecting and not trying to sell at a profit it doesn't matter as long as your happy with it (and smash it out of the plastic cage)
You will never soar like an eagle if you hang around with turkeys.....
