I am just getting into collectng canadain silver. I have a few questions in regards to the variations. I notice some years have multiple veriations of coins. Is it important to have these in a collection? Do other collectors consider a collection inferior if it does not have a lot of variations. I want to focus on the nickel 1858-1921 (minus the 1921..lol) I am also going to collect silver half dollars and quarters. What advice can you give me to start off my collecting. I do not have a large excessive fund and want to put about 100 bucks a month into it.

As a new collector myself this is what I've learned in the last year - First and foremost get a Charlton Guide you can use this to ensure that you are not overpaying for your coins. Second try to buy the highest grade coin you can find research each coin to find their mintage and current values per grade.

Don't waste your money on anything less than MS, Specimen or Proof for any coin post 1949. I wouldn't worry much about variations at this point unless you luck out on a deal, just take your time and concentrate on getting the highest grade possible coin. Many of the earlier coins Victoria & Edward for example may mean buying F or VF coins or even G6 for the rarer ones, there are still many EF and AU and better out there but they are getting pricey.

Also check http://www.coinsandcanada.com/coins-prices.php and completed ebay listings if you're on ebay. CCN Trends is another popular price list but you need to subscribe.
I like varieties. But there can be a seemingly unending amount of them which can get very expensive if you're not careful so I tend to stick with just the major varieties listed in Charlton. Minor varieties I'll pick up if they're interesting and reasonably priced. IE I might pay a couple of bucks more than I would pay for the regular coin but sometimes you see them listed for double or triple list price and that just makes me laugh as I move along.

...Dan I wish I had joined this site years ago..Because so many things I have learnt from here on what to do..That years ago when I aquired coins that I didn't do...My advice is to go slow when looking at a coin under magnifying glass (At least desk model 9X)..Learn the varieties as you put it...Mint errors, die, lettering, etc...Do this before you wrap them in white 2X2's..I write stuff on my Holders as well..Stay with us here..I am enjoying the Half now myself- finished with Penny just before Canada stopped...

Best advice that was given to me.... figure out how much you would be willing to spend on coins and buy some good books instead... in this hobby education is a great asset that will allow you to enjoy this hobby a whole lot more.

After I think it's great that you're looking for others for advice but when it comes to collecting we each have our own little niche I suppose. I personally like date sets but not really too impressed with varieties. I know others that really like type sets...

A previous poster made mention of trying to get everything in MS condition... that's okay if you can afford it... I think it's better that you collect and enjoy your collection for what it is... rather than worry about how much it will cost you... Remember in the end this is all just for fun!

I'm having a blast with this... I hope you do too!
