Ok have a few posts up!! The challege has been the Lincoln Cent!! I got some amazing advice in the category and read alot of posts and thanks to Coop showing me some neat stuff and my computer whiz daughter I am starting to get some awesome images of coin errors..this is a thread I posted comparing a 40 dollar USB Microscope to a "best buy" on sale bundle 534 dollar nikon. I shopped elsewhere and got a deal with a macro lens setup and as has been previously posted on here about the 400 budget setup.. I am officially at 307.55 for this setup.. This is a free hand focus picture cause I was to lazy to use my 13.99 wally world tripod..

Looks a little out of focus. Might be from movement due to "free hand focus". Use your tripod. Looks like your gonna have a lot of fun. Enjoy your new setup. Getting the lighting just right is the biggest challenge once you get used to your setup. I rarely use the desk lamps & found that 2 hand held home depot utility lights clamped to a stick (so you can hold it in one hand) with daylight bulbs gives me the best lighting & maneuvarability of those lights. Have fun. Bob

IF you ever decide to get a microscope, you can attach the Nikon to the scope to get some amazing photos.
I have a thread on my microscope and camera setup and I am quite pleased with the results.

As of late I am able to take very close photos of the variety in question with little to no light and the issue in the picture is glare free, and shows incredible detail when it comes down to Lincoln cents. The Silver coins are much more difficult to shoot since they love to shine right back at the microscope lens and affect the true focus of the coin.

In the end, individual improvements, personal tastes and satisfaction is what its all about. Congrats on the new setup.

I wouldn't call the 28-80 a "macro" lens, although it's a pretty good lens for what it is. Minimum focusing distance is about 16", which is probably the reason this shot is out of focus. At that distance, though, with a dSLR and appropriate technique, I wouldn't be surprised if the 28-80 produces nice full-face shots. The lens has a pretty unique capability - the minimum focusing distance does not change with focal length, which is quite rare. You can use it at 80mm the same as you would at 28mm, and that's how I'd recommend it be done.
