Hello,

I just spotted this coin previewed at an auction and wanted to know the following:

1) Does it appear to be authentic?

2) Does the side of the coin shown display and error or variety traits?

3) Assuming the reverse side (which I do not have the photo for) has the same grade as the currently-visible obverse, what would be a reasonable retail price to pay for this coin?

Thank you,
mdpmedia

Only a £30 coin it would appear.

This one http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HALFPENNY...047675.l2557 made £46 (US$77) so I'd say Peter's estimate ($50ish) is about right.

However I for one would not bid on anything if I couldn't see a good quality photograph of both sides. The other could be flat for all you know.

There is no known variety of the Coventry Halfpenny that would justify the price on the flip. If the reverse is of similar quality £40 sounds about right. But be prepared for a fight, I've sold many far worse than this and often been surprised by the prices they fetched. Lady Godiva seems to attract some odd bids.

I wouldnt pay more than £5 for it, but I have patience on my side and I've seen hundreds sell. An uncirculated Conder token, with red, can be had for less than £30 - a bit more for these, people really go for Elephants. I would say this would be a £20 coin.

These are so common that no-one would bother faking them. I have one that was completed uncirculated, light brown tone, but it seems that someone propped up a sofa with it in the past and scraped off most of the design. I own two, the scraped one cost £2.38 and the other, which is considerably worn, cost £2.49.

Someone having written 'Rare, very rare', on a flip doesn't make it so. The price is silly.
These are available, in better grades than the one in the photograph, for the sort of prices being suggested by contributors here.
