I've been collecting proof sets for some time now and have come to a bit of a crossroads. I have a continuous run of US clad sets from 1956-2014, and my sikver sets only go back to 2004. With the price of these sets getting higher almost every year, I've been thinking about only buying the silver set and avoiding the clads. There is a little part of me that says I should still buy both to keep the clad set current. I was just wondering what some of you guys would do in this situation or have done. I know the clads aren't worth squat unless the mintage is way down like 2012. Just can't help feeling like I should keep going the way I started. Any opinions will be much appreciated.

I'm not allowed to give advice. Here's why. My neighbor bought two sets each year from way back. I told him that he'd be better off waiting a few years when the price drops. He took my advice. That was in the beginning of 2012. Whoops.

I think you should just stay current. Once you get a few sets behind, it can become a daunting task to catch up.

Clad sets are 1971 to date

1968 to 1970 contain a 40% silver half

1965, 1966 and 1967 are Special Mint Sets since there were no proof sets made those years. The halves in these sets are 40% silver too.

I stopped buying the proof sets in 2009, it looks like I may have erred since there are quite a few sets after that have gone up in value.

Why stop? If you have the money, continue on. No reason at all to break the streak.

And just work on getting the other silvers as you can. At least on those you only need to go back to 92.

The real question is, Do you like having the sets? If you do then you should keep buying them (whether you buy them from the mint or wait a few years and buy them on the aftermarket is up to you.) If they aren't that important to you and you just buy them because you always have, then you would probably be better off just passing.

I prefer the silver sets and have bought them from the mint yearly since 1995. I did pick up two I was missing for completion of the run. Now 20 years of collecting and the combined sets are impressive. The clad sets have beauty but will not be as valuable but after 20 years for you having both would also be impressive.
