I have a roll of 1943 D zinc/steel wheat pennies. This has yet been the hardest coin to find info about because the issues of replating. Here is what I've used a magnet and it will pick up the coin. The coin is super lightweight and almost feels and looks like a play token and I didn't think the magnet would pick it up but it does. Does that mean it's real or not? Secondly, these are very very shiny and brilliant mirror proof color and the pictures don't do them justice because the reflection from the coins are picking up colors surround them. I know these coins doesn't appear shiny and all the same but they are. Can someone let me know if these are real and if so, what grade and the value? Thank you in advance. Also- the edges are super slick smooth. Thanks again

They all look to have been replated.

Steel cents are magnetic. From the pictures, and the way you describe them they all appear to have been replated.

They are real 1943 steel cents. Most probably have little wear (like xf or au details) but have been re-plated in zinc to make them appear "nicer"

Now that we've established these are real- what is the value?

Replated cents are considered damaged and are not of much interest to collectors. Uncirculated steels are not that expensive and are readily available. You can buy lots of 100 replated steel cents on ebay anywhere from 10-30 cents each.

Thank you - how can I be sure these aren't replated and how much would an original one of these be worth?

Replated, or "Reprocessed" as many people say, steel cents are damaged coins. People would get circulated steel cents and plate them so they will look as if they are UNC. They do not hold much value at all.

Replated cents are pretty easy to spot. Keep one of these and compare with other ones you are thinking of buying so you can tell the difference. Value will depend on condition, it can range from a few cents to a few thousand dollars.

You can check prices here

You can get a rough estimate of grade by looking here as well.

Yes that is correct. That is what they are selling for on ebay. You might get lucky and sell them for more, or if you break them down into smaller groups.

Yeah, it bites. I have some legit ones that are unc, and they look like this one. See that band of light across the cent? That`s a telltale sign of it being genuine. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1943-LINCOL...em27d913814e

Cartwheel luster ...It doesn't have to be 'bright and shiny' to have it.

Genuine original steel cents will not have zinc plating on the edge, it will be raw steel. That is also the reason why so many steel cents have rust. A reprocessed/replated cent will be completely plated and typically have an unnatural shiny appearance.

Just make sure they aren't replated with mercury.
