I have this weird one dollar coin from Hong Kong. What's odd about it is that it has a brilliant, and quite beautiful, gold colour to it - the photos below really do no justice to the coin at all. In the hand the coin is lovely.

All the info I can find on this coin show it as being silver coloured. I was wondering what this coin actually is. Has someone dipped it in gold paint, or is it a special edition? I received it amongst change at a Hong Kong pharmacy - the shopkeeper didn't seem phased by the coin.

On the "head" side the colouration is flaking off, revealing the silver colouration below.

Do you think it has perhaps been done by just some random person for reason of novelty, or did it leave the mint looking this way?
