Hi, I have looked through APMEX and found some coins I would like to add to my collection, but the prices makes me unsure if I'm paying to much premium. My collection is based on some nusimatic coins from Norway, mostly bought with a premium of 1-1,5%. There are one Krugerrand and a Kangoroo coin also in the collection. Earlier I thought of bying dates, but after reconsideration I found some other coins I liked better, but I'm unsure as the subjects says if the are worth it or that I'm overpaying for something that is less valuble. Some of the coins are early Pandas in gold MS-67/68 with a premium of 100 USD against current spot and up to 200 USD for 2010 and 2012/2013. Early dates are 1985-1988, and also 2010, 2012,2013 and 2014. Then there are the year of the horse coins from Perth http://www.apmex.com/product/79904/...t-pr-70-pcgsand http://www.apmex.com/product/78077/...se-series-iiHere only the high relif coins bother me - are they worth almost 600 USD over premium? It seems a bit much. The 2oz based on earlier issues seems to rise to 3600 USD over time and are less usual to find, so value can increase over time with that. The high relif is 388 coins world wide, but would it increase so much? There is also the 1 kg silver coins of the horse, koala and so on that I consider - but based on searches done in the forum I found some thought that 10 oz-1 kg coins were less likly to increase in worth over time than 2 oz and 5 oz, also they would be less easy to sell. Any thoughts? thanks in advanced :)

Sometimes I think we get numismatics and stacking mixed up, I know I do.
If your more of a coin collector than a stacker(from your post I think you are) I would say go ahead and treat these coins/rounds just like any other coin you want to buy IE better grade = higher price.

Hi, thanks for the answer. I think I'm a bit of both.
I buy "bullion" - i.e Norwegian gold coins that are sold a dime a dozen, because no one wants them with a premium of 1-1,5%, those I buy the the same coin over and over again to "stack". While once in a while there are those special coins that I just like because they are nice or hold a motive I really like.
Also the 2 oz wasn't that expensive as it's 1 oz counterpart. For instance in Norway a dealer said 1 oz year of the tiger (series II)10 000 nok (roughly 1650 USD), while the 2 oz same quality and motive was 16000 - roughly 2650 USD...so the premium on that was much less than for the 1 oz. Therefor I wondered which would over the next year have the best payoff _if_ I were to sell?
Also - If I was to semi collect, would the pandas, lunar etc pay off - or just waste of money when I can buy the Norwegian proof 1/2 oz gold coins for much less premium?

Sounds to me like you want the spot price of bullion but for it to increase in value like numismatics over time above spot...
There are some coins which in the past have done pretty well.. unfortunately I personally consider these the "beanie babies" of the bullion market... they're a fad.. they right now have a market because people feel they're desireable but in the end they're still just worth the content of the metal.
I would say you're probably going to do a lot better long term either picking up bullion at as close to spot as possible.... or picking up high grade numismatics that at one point were actually used as a form of currency.
The "semi-numi" stuff really is a big grey area which I don't care to veture in...
Check out your coin supplier I'm sure you can get some GREAT looking coins that will be near to spot... if you make some good choices early on... you may pick up on something that is "trending" and so be it ride that gravy train... Just my opinion..

Hi, Thanks - I figured that (that was why I skipped a lot of "beanie babies" in the begnning when adviced not to buy them)
I figure I might be skipping those silver coins with a very high premium and focuse on the gold coins with less premium and then see. Maybe I should try to smugle some silver bars - its 25% VAT on them in Norway :P

UGH 25% VAT in Norway!! That's very hard to overcome ... spot would have to go up nearly %50 just for you to start making head ground...
There are ways around this though.. ... If I'm right Sovereigns can be purchased without a VAT...
Other than that..I think if I was you I would be saving my $$$ and plan a road trip and buy where there is no VAT...
On the two items that you had links to.. I personally like that 2oz lunar horse as it's a whole lot closer to spot than the PR set... and who knows in 10 - 15 yrs you may just end up selling it to someone born in 2014 who will be willing to pay a premium to have such a coin.

Japp - its 25% on bars, which means gold bars and silver bars...propbably also platinum and palladium is out of the question. Hence coins are my only option...also its a limit as to how much you can bring back into the country without paying extra for it (go through customs)...so I figured with my girlfriend I could buy about 2 kg-3kg each time we went out :p Probably its better with silver coins...any suggestions? :P
With regards to the coins - is there any other gold coins with very low premium out there? I saw sovereigns were mentioned...after a nights sleep I figured I would skip pandas as they had 100-200 USD in premium and buy something else, also the high relifs was something I though could be skipped.

South African Krugerrands and Canadian Maples normally sell closest to spot here in USA, you could try those.

Hi and thanks for all the replies:
I went for following
2 oz Snake series 2 2 oz horse series 2 1 oz dragon series 2 1 oz rabbit series 2 1 oz tiger series 2
and three pandas...two were quite close to spot...50usd over, and one was 100 usd over.
I think this should be enough for now with coin shopping :p It should amunt to about 7,5% premium if I get the prices I asked for which seemed fair...well...you only live once...at least it is a better investment than buying a medium format sony camera for the same amount of money which was the plan :p
