I had initially thought this coin was from either one of the Indian Princely States, or one of the Indian Independent Kingdoms. I picked it up with a small lot of coins that were from 17th and 18th century India. In the box I got them out of there were also some old "Roman" coins.
Now I have looked through every catalog I can get my hands on and hundreds of pictures on the internet. I can not find a match any where.
However, after browsing numerous "horse" coins I wonder if I was looking in the wrong area. Could this be a barbarian imitation? I see there are a lot of horses on Celtic coins. I also see there are some early Greece coins with horses on them. Same for Carthage and China.
Part of the problem I am having is that there doesn't seem to be any recognizable text or legend. I don't recall seeing a horse of this style before either. It does not look like the overly stylized horses on some coins. If anything it reminds me of cave painting I've seen of horses in France.
The other side is puzzling too. There are some circles, or dots, or leaves on a vine. Some lines also.
I am less familiar with ancient coins so I was wondering if if someone could tell me by the style if I was headed in the wrong direction or not by looking at ancient coins.

Weight: 1.21 grams
Composition: Copper or Bronze
Size: 9 to 12 mm

This one is beyond me. My best guess would be Indian.

I am pretty confidant that I have attributed the coin now. The writing on the reverse (as near as I can tell, not being a native speaker), and the description of the obverse, along with the coin being in the style of the other coins of the same denomination from this period and location, have led me to identify it as a Madurai 1 Kasu, KM#4.
