The German Oak Tree 5 mark coin has always been one of my favorites. I love the hidden symbolism of the oak tree design. When I saw this counterfeit copy it was love at first sight. Quality wise it would not fool any collector. It is a circulated looking cast copy of 35.9mm in diameter which is close to the 36 mm it should be but weighs only 20.67 grams or about 20% less than it should. It is not silver and does not pass the ring test since it is not die struck but it would fool the public. This is a contemporary counterfeit of it's time and that is why I am so fascinated with it. I have owned this little fake for over 35 years and am not bored with it yet.

The oak tree represents the unbending strength of Germany in spite of it's defeat in WWI and the dead branches represent the German lost territories.

dkper, it seems you are so confident it was a contemporary counterfeit rather than a modern forgery. Why you don't think it is a worthless modern forgery?

Like I said I have owned it for 35 years and it came out of an old collection back then. I can't prove it goes back to the 1930s but I feel comfortable with that assumption.

PS The fakes coming out of the far east are far superior to this in quality.
