Hi everyone, I just picked up this piece for a nice price. However, I know very little about this sort and do not know how to categorize it. Any help/info would be appreciated!

Also, thanks to a bit of trade of superfluous modern coins, I paid only $30 for it. Do you think that I did ok?

I think you done ok on this coin. I would say condition is about fine, a vf example would cost about $100 and significantly more than that for a very high grade.

Its L. Caecilius Metellus Diadematus. Rome mint. Helmeted head of Roma right; mark of value behind / Pax driving biga right; below, elephant head right. Crawford 262/1; Sydenham 496; Caecilia 38

Some more info, if your wondering about the Elephant head (which I was).

His great grandfather was Lucius Caecilius Metellus. Wiki has this to say about him:

He defeated the Carthaginian chief Hasdrubal at the celebrated Battle of Panormus, leading to the turn of the First Punic War and to the Roman domination of Sicily. In that battle, in which he deserved the Honours of the Triumph, he defeated thirteen enemy generals and captured one hundred and twenty elephants, some of which he exhibited to the Roman people and since then starting to appear with frequency in the Caecilii coins.

Very nice. I would have missed the elephant head if it hadn't been pointed out.

Jimbo777- Thanks for the help! I really do appreciate it!

Thanks for the complements, everyone.

Any guesses as to what a fair value of my coin may be? (I'm just wondering for insurance purposes)

No problem Archraz.
It's difficult to place an exact figure on what your coin is worth but I think you got it for a decent price. You can get an idea of what similar pieces are selling for retail by searching for the moneyer on a dealer website like vcoins. Alternatively many auction websites - cngcoins for example - have a searchable archive of past sales.
