How do I know if this coin is real? I don't even remember where it came from. It appears bronze in color, aprox 18-20mm across, well-defined man's head with earring, not so well-defined horse's head, mane visible, possibly eye, shadow of something beneath jaw. I know from this forum it is Tanit with horse c.350-265 BC and I've seen photos with wonderful detail. Is there a value? Is it a collectible item? Any help will be welcome. Les

to the community I don't see any indication that would make me think it's face. The shape of the flan and details look 100% correct IMO.

Yes, that was definitely minted by Carthage. Nothing about it makes me question its authenticity. Also Tanit is female :)

Looks good to me. The portrait of Tanit is exceptional. Looks like the Phoenician letter O in the right field. Nice coin. It has good value.

Nice coin. Not an expert on Carthage but it would probably bring 150 - 200. Others here could probably give you a more definite price.

, Les! There are many lovers of Carthaginian coins on this forum, including me. At a glance I thought the coin was cast-- it looks like copper, it is pitted, the cracks look a bit filled, the the devices look somewhat "melted" at the junction with the flan. However, perhaps it looks this way due to cleaning by electrolysis. FVRIVS RVFVS, what do you think?

I think it's just the picture. IMO I didn't see any sign of it being cast.

It looks possibly overcleaned to me. Many of these Punic coins have a dark black patina, some of which can be seen on the reverse of the coin. Whether those are spots of patination that never overtook the rest of the coin or the spots left after over cleaning I don't know, but it would explain the fabric of the coin.

Thank you folks. As I said, I have no history on this coin...I don't even know how it came to be in my possession. Thanks for all the info. I guess I need to find someone locally who knows ancient coins to get a definitive answer as to its authenticity and its value. Again, thank you all.

If you can post a picture of the edge we can help you a little bit more. Sometimes there is an obvious casting line from where the two side of the mold connected. Nothing will be better than the opinion of an expert that can hold it in hand, though, if that's an option.
