I understand there is a vocal group that doesn't believe ANY label should bring a premium. I agree with some specialty labels and even the "First Strike" labels are a bit silly (to me). I'm not trying to solicit more dialog about why the coin is all that matters...

So, the PCGS Mercanti labels on the American Silver Eagles... These seem to have the uniqueness of being signed by the designer of the reverse and are special for that reason. Does anyone believe that these labels will bring a future premium that will significantly increase the value of the ASE's? Wouldn't it be similarly special to have an Augustus Saint-Gaudens signed slab?

IMO, a designing artist signature is one of the very few things that should add value to a slabbed coin. Mercanti also held the position of Chief Engraver of the US Mint until he retired in 2010.

I agree with this thought. The vast majority of other labels are woefully boring. The designer's signature adds to the artistry of the piece IMO.

I would place a label with the designer's/engraver's signature above other "special" labels in terms of historical context and meaningfulness.

I think, however, potential future value appreciation is VERY dependent on how many signed labels are available in the marketplace. If the supply is fairly large, it will likely be able to meet demand and thus prevent strong price increases.

I realize that Mr. Mercanti has only signed a limited number of the inserts, but I don't know if that "limited" number is 1,000 or 10,000 (or something else)! And I don't know how many collectors desire his signature.

If you can get a signed example for your collection at a reasonable price, I would go ahead and buy it. I'm not sure I would buy them in quantity, however, with the expectation of a strong future ROI.

If the ebay market place is an indication, there is a high premium for the Mercanti label. The 1987 ASE (PR70) proof has been trending around $900 with a few exceptions going at slightly over $1000. A Mercanti slab of this coin in the same grade sold yesterday for $2000.

It didn't surprise me that it went a higher, it did surprise me that the selling price doubled!
