So I'm currently working on a U.S. coin Dansco 7070 - in PCGS form. It'll be neat but pricy to complete, so I'm looking forward to it. However, since the Morgan dollar is my favorite design, denomination, and size I'm also going to put together a year and mintmark set along with the 1878 varieties.
I want to work on them both, but I'm going to have to choose one for now. I'll get a few coins for each set and see which one I enjoy the most so I can pursue that. I'm currently leaning toward a Morgan set.
I like a lot of other designs that I'll enjoy getting for the type set (WLH, SLQ, Peace dollar, Braided hair large and Half Cents), but others (Liberty $2.5, $5, $10, $20, other gold $1 and $3, Barber coinage) I just won't like spending the money on. No offense to collectors of Barber (I know there's a lot of you... Sorry!) collectors and Liberty gold collectors, but that's just me.

So a little about the Morgan collection that I'll plan on putting together...

I plan on making this a neat thing to do. I'm going to have a MS grade set (60-68) on the more common years. The MS67 will be the 1879-S and MS68 will be the 1881-S, the two most common years in uber conditions. San Francisco apparently took pride in their Morgans. I'll put together all the MS-63 to MS66 easy date years first, then move on to MS easy date CCs, then move on to Key date years in lower conditions and try to put a set of below MS grades:
(EDIT: I will also include one or more PL examples and one or more DMPL examples)
-PO 01 and FR 02 will be difficult, I made not include them
-AG 03
-G 04
-G 06
-VG 08
-VG 10
-F 12
-F 15
-VF 20
-VF 25
-VF 30
-VF 35 (eek, lots of VF)
-XF 40
-XF 45
-AU 50
-AU 53
-AU 55
-AU 58
-MS 60, 61, 62, 63, 64, 65, 66, 67, 68. No 69 unless I win the lottery.

All of these in one set:
-Date set: 1878-1921
-Mint mark set: P, D, S, CC, O
-Grade set: PO 01/AG 03-MS68, along with one or more PL and one or more DMPL
-Major variety set: all of the 1878s, 1879-S variety, 1880/79-CC, 1880-CC 8/7 reverse of 1878 variety, and so on.

Thanks for looking. This is gonna be fun!

All I can say is good luck to you. This seems like quite a hefty venture for someone of your age. But if you pull it off, kudos to you! Keep us updated of your ventures.

As nice as that would be, I probably won't be able to finish it well into my 20s or 30s. Thanks!

Good luck I guess. That's quite a project to take on, experienced collectors try something like this after years of collecting and with a large financial backing. Keep us updated.

That's quite a challenge. The Morgan set alone is going to set you back quite a few large. Best of luck and remember to post pictures.

Awesome goals! Keep track of what you spend on each project. I would be curious as to what each would cost.

Of course not. But not many collect full sets of proof classic coins, simply because of their prices. That would be quite a feat, especially the 1895. After I finish selling a good few coins that I can't appreciate, I'm going to purchase quite a few Morgans and a Seated Half that was purchased for me (I need to pay the person!).

I've decided on pursuing the Morgan set first.

The 1879 is QUITE the looker, which kinda justifies my spending too much money on it... Kinda.... Not really...
Anyway, the 1879 and the 1904 morgans were submitted to PCGS by me, and the next two raw coins I will submit to PCGS next time.

Then, the 1904-O

Then the two raw coins that were previously in NGC slabs, both labeled MS63.

As a fellow YN, I wish you luck. I've seriously considered a certified Morgan set and a PCGS type set along with many other sets but they've never really taken off. I've gone through many serious collecting phases though, and now I have many small subsets including dies & collars, dime errors, and now original and restrike u.s. mint medals from 1920 to present. I dont foresee changing interests, but I guess it's inevitable.

Also, how was the process of submitting to pcgs? I have my vouchers which I will use when I'm at the ANA show this August - I don't want to waste money shipping them to pcgs so I thought this would be better. Lol

What is the estimated cost for all these Morgans (if you tried to put it all together today)?

wait, I'm confused

Why are you looking for old pre-'33 gold in the other post but on this post you've gone as far as apologizing to old gold collectors for it not being your cup of tea?

Yep! @dsfreeworld

I like the Indian heads and Saint gaudens, but the Liberty heads just aren't my thing. I'm experimenting, finding my niche and what I like.

@machine20

Well, that depends. I'd like to get as many MS coins as I can, but the rarer dates like in the mid 1890s will have to be in lower grades. I would estimate over, maybe far over, $30,000, including major varieties, dates, and mintmarks.

OK! Here's a new coin that my Mom got for me. Should get here in the next few weeks. MS-64+ PCGS, maybe MS-65 with a resubmission.

My apologies about the crummy photos.
