I won this and although I am not really a penny collector, I thought I would take a shot at it. It is neat and I have found out a little information on it. The VDB was put back in 1918 but I can not find more information about this particular variety.

In the ANACS population report there are 50 of these listed so they can not be that common. At least I would think so.

I know there are many penny collectors here and any information you could give to enlighten me about the newest addition to my collection I would be grateful.

Die wear/grease filled die removes/prevents the VDB. Not a variety. Just something like the missing "FG" on the cents and halves. It was there, but worn or filled in and it doesn't show it on your coin.

Ok I think I understand. I am familiar with the 82 NoFG Kennedy. It was left off the die and these are sold at a premium. I have about 30 or so I have found over the years.

Since ANACS only has 50, then either they are not common or not commonly slabbed :)

Still $10 for a MS65 RED one is not bad to me as it will be my first slabbed wheatie.

No the initials were on the dies originally. The die was over polished and the initials were polished off the die. This is probably also the reason the VDB is missing on the cent. A Grease Filled Die is very unlikely to remove the intials on a Lincoln Cent because the initials are incuse on the coin so the letters are raised on the die. In order for a filled die to hide the initials the entire shoulder area in the die would have to be filled in.

You are correct Condor101. The devices on the die would be raised. So it would be impossible for this to be a Struck Through Grease error.
