New member here, I picked this 1 oz bar up the other day mostly because of the price but I also liked the rainbow-like patina that covers most of it. I am just curious if anyone here can tell if this is a natural patina or just one that someone has altered. The only things I know about it are that it was made by The Hamilton Mint and was minted in 1974. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Myvote is "natural" but it's really interesting how it toned on the building. I've seen this bars stored all sorts of ways, but many were originally wrapped in paper stacks that created nice toning.

what was the price that might help to see if its natural or not
does look nice but does it have a copper core as you can see copper colour in the deeper parts like the windows
just a thought

@shanew Believe it or not I found it at a garage sale at the bottom of a wooden box full of old jewelry, coins, etc. and payed only $5.00 for it. As far as I know they only made sets of 5000 silver state bars and 5000 gold plated silver state bars. I wondered the same thing about the copper core but some of the windows have a blue color to them as well. Thanks for the input.

It looks like a natural patina caused by silver oxidation to me. Of course, all oxidation is a natural process so we can only speculate whether it was intentionally or unintentionally caused. The different colors are caused by the different thicknesses of the oxidation layer. The thinner layers have lighter colors, tending toward yellowish tints. As more oxidation occurs, the colors run the gamut and eventually get very dark, like the dark purple and black around the edges of your ingot. Your ingot is a little unusual in that it shows such a broad range of levels of oxidation. If I had to speculate, I'd guess that your ingot was in a fire and was stored in a way that allowed the highly corrosive (i.e., oxidizing) smoke to reach the edges much better than the center.
