I was just going through a stack of half dollars and I noticed what I thought was a die crack running all the way across the coin in a zig zag pattern. I was gonna post some pics of it when I glanced at another coin of the same year and mint and noticed the same line. I now have 14 coins in front if me all of the same year and mint mark. 11 of them have the line/crack and three don't..... Am I on to something? Who would I report this to if it is something? Is there any value or fame or fortune for discovering these things if it is?

But to explore your original question - for a variety to take off, it usually has to be significant enough to be easily recognized and exist in sufficient quantity that a decent number of people can own one. What that quantity is will vary with the variety.

Sometimes it helps to have a cutesy name - the "Bugs Bunny" variety. But it also helps if somebody very famous or very rich (or both) decides to buy one for strong money.
