The light at the end of the Cohen variety tunnel just got a bit brighter with this addition. I am 8 away from completing the Classic Head series of circulation strikes sans 1831 with the addition of this 1825. Photo is from the seller, it appears to have some of the red indicative of a past cleaning but details are the key here as this is the C1 variety and high grade examples are exceedingly rare. What do you all think as to a grade? This is Breen's die state III. Given the detail of the hair on the obverse, the wreath detail is probably a result of strike/die weakness and the later die state.

If I understand you correctly you are doing a die variety Classic Head Half Cent set.
I don't know the history of the 1831 coins but they are VERY expensive.
If you ARE doing a die variety set how many coins is that?
And it can't be cheap; the 1811's alone are costly.

I have a complete Red Book set (15 coins).
And I know about the 1811's since I have both a C-1 and C-2.

The last one I got was the 1809 "o in 0".
It's a LOT harder to find than the catalog value would indicate.

I would give it a solid AU-55 BN, with a potential for details as you said. I would say get it if you think it will be a nice addition to your collection.

I would say this coin is into AU territory. Nice coin with good eye appeal.

The peripheral tone on both obverse and reverse is very appealing - the centers more reddish, as you say, but may not necessarily be the result of a cleaning.

I just checked my 1825 1/2C and was pleased to see it seems to be the same variety as yours, C-1 (with the curl over the 5).

Kanga: I am doing a Chohen variety set but am not including the 1831 circulation strike. The set is 24 coins and I have 8 left to find. By far the hardest of the set is the 1809 C-1. Both 1811's are relatively easy compared to that one. The ones I have left are: 1809 C-1, C-6; 1810 C-1; 1811 C-1, C-2; 1825 C-2; 1832 C-2; 1835 C-1. Of those only half I consider difficult/expensive, the others I could probably find and purchase today if I wasn't on a budget. I also agree with you on the 1809 C-4 (o in 0) it is incredibly difficult to find without problems or in a high grade, my example is F15 with light corrosion issues but good eye appeal. If you look on ebay though, the vast majority of heavily corroded 1809 Half Cents will turn out to be the C-4 variety. Also, while 1825 C-1 is an R3, I find that the 1826 C-2 (also R3) is MUCH more difficult to find.

GERMANICVS: Would love to see your example posted sometime! If you have an 1826, check to see if it's the C-2 variety (leaf position in relation to the S in states)

I enjoy doing NGC Registry Sets so all my major coins are slabbed.
I only know some of the Cohen numbers for my Classic Head Half Cent set.
Here's the set (to see the coin click on the "eye" over towards the right):

Hi EFlargeCents, here is my 1825 1/2C.

In lower grade as can be seen - around VF20 I would say.
Colour is overall pleasant, but may have been lightly cleaned.

I do not have many Half Cents in my collection, and unfortunately no 1826, but I do appreciate them. My 1811 is only a VG.

EFLargecent-Beautiful coin! Possibly a past cleaning, but, it wouldn't bother me. As far as grade and even with the possibility of a weak strike which is hard to say with the coin not in hand I'm in at VF35.

AU-53, has been lightly cleaned in the past but it doesn't seem to detract much. I think there is a good chance it would grade problem free.

I bought this thinking XF40. Once in hand I'll know more. I didn't pay anywhere near the price of an AU example. Thanks for all your input!
