So this is my first Trajan, and I don't know much about his coins. This example looks better in hand, but it does seem like someone really smothered it in Renwax (seriously, some coins just lose all details with thick coatings of that stuff). Any help IDing the variety would be appreciated! Also, I paid $28 for it. Do you think taht I did OK?

It is OK now, maybe just very slow to load. Is there any chance you can make out any of the legend on the reverse?
You can remove ren wax with white spirit, but I don't know whether this would have a detrimental effect on your coin. Perhaps the others may be able to help. Ben is a budding chemist, he might have some ideas. Google throughly before you try.

Not sure what the US version is, do lots of reading and get advice from the others here before you do anything, you don't want to risk the coin! Ancientnoob might help if he pops in.

Acetone is the equivalent available to you - we cant get the stuff here. Unfortunately, Renwax has some polymers in it that arent soluble in regular solvents like acetone. Some people are against it because its so hard to remove.
However, chances are that it isn't renwax (its pricey), so id give it an extended acetone soak anyway to try and remove whatever it is. If you're feeling like it, leave it near an open window exposed to the sunlight and the UV will photosynthesise Acetic acid which certainly would remove Renwax, given time. But would also give the coin minor BD, so you'd have to treat for that afterwards. Of course, this could explode a normal jar in hot weather, so you'd have to leave it open, with perhaps a flap of card over the mouth sealed with vaseline, so pressure cannot build up.
The other method you could try is an abrasive, like a brass brush, but this could damage the coin. I might try looking up methods of removal...Ive never had to.
