I just posted on ebay two silver eagles- one with the blue band across that says "25th anniversary" and another one that is also 25th anniversary but has "First Strike" on it. I was looking at past prices it sold for to see what to expect and I noticed a huge price difference. Is it because of the blue band vs first strike or is it because of the PR69 vs PR70?

I have a feeling it is the illusion of perfection.
PCGS is tougher on coins than NGC which is tougher than ANACS.
I would take a PCGS MS69 over a NGC MS70 anyday...same goes with proofs...and I would not pay extra for "First Strike" monikers.

I have been selling these for the last 6 months or so (up to the 1st week of May when I went on vacation). During that time the PCGS FS PF69's were selling in the $350-370 range. The NGC PF70's were around $770 (non-ER) and the ER around $840 Quote: I would take a PCGS MS69 over a NGC MS70 anyday...same goes with proofs...and I would not pay extra for "First Strike" monikers. ANYTIME you want to trade a 2011P PCGS 69 for a NGC PF70 let me know. I will be happy to oblige....and...it is irrelevant whether YOU believe in FS or ER labels. The facts are that they sell for more...

Well.. If I were to get a NGC PF70 or a PCGS PR69 for free... I would choose the NGC, obviously because it would sell for more. However, if I was going to have to purchase it out of my money, I would definitely get the PCGS PR69 because it would be ridiculously cheaper but just as beautiful.
The NGC would definitely sell for more because it is "perfect".

No argument there...I got all my sets from the Mint (20) and had them all graded. Re: selling sets....my auctions were/are all auction style starting at 99 cents. Gotta get back in the game again this weekend...

There is a tremendous difference in ASE prices from PR/PF 69 to PR/PF 70. From a visual standpoint, there is very little to distinguish the average 70 from the average 69, however the small population of 70 graded coins makes the price jump significantly. I'm working a PCGS PR70 (PCGS) set. I'm lacking only the 10 coins from the 1990's (1990-1999)... it's been challenging and fun, but I consider this more of an investment than a collection.

It would seem that the main price difference would come down to the grade. Even though like everyone has stated above that PCGS is a tougher grader than NGC, some people overlook that and buy the holder and not the coin. Others like collecting the different designations on the holders themselves, but they have essentially the same early production stickers.

From the pictures, I think the NGC 70 is much more appealing. I like that frosted look it has. I can see both coins have it so its probably just the photo making it look nicer to me.

I wanted to express my opinion about the labels on slabs. I know there are a lot of people who are very opposed to considering a premium for ANY label. I understand that opinion and believe the market place has a mixed record on most labels... there is one important exception... While many are interesting and certainly different, the ONLY one that I consider to be a genuine value-added to a coin is the " John Mercanti" labels. Certainly my opinion and dependent upon how many coins in the grade were labeled, but those labels feature the signature of the ASE Designer. There was a recent ebay auction that I was tracking on a PR70 1987-S ASE. The coin can be purchased fairly easily in this grade for $800-$900. This coin had the Mercanti label and sold for $2000.
