In a similar vein to the 1936 San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge commemorative half dollar (my subject in a previous post in this thread - link below), the 1936 Rhode Island Tercentenary half dollar does not feature a sailing ship, but it definitely qualifies for inclusion in a boat or watercraft theme discussion. Over time, this thread has morphed a bit to include lots of types of watercraft - many that are not traditional "sailing ships" - so, I'm posting this one in a similar spirit. The 1936 Rhode Island Tercentenary half dollar was issued to mark the 300th anniversary of the founding of Providence, RI and was sponsored by the Providence Tercentenary Committee. The obverse of the coin depicts Roger Williams, the Providence colony's founder, standing in a canoe as he comes ashore at the mouth of the Moshassuck River. He is shown offering a friendly wave to the Native American greeting him; he his holding the Bible - his conversion intentions clear! A rising sun is seen in the background. The reverse of the coin features a reasonably faithful rendition of the Seal of the State of Rhode Island. The Seal is dominated by a large anchor at its center, thus maintaining a nautical connection on both sides of the coin. The coin was designed by Newport, RI artists John Benson and Arthur Carey. 1936-D Rhode Island Tercentenary Half Dollar I've posted before about the Rhode Island coin: - 1936 Rhode Island Tercentenary- 1936 Rhode Island Tercentenary - Revisited- Horace Grant & the 1936 Rhode Island Half Dollar- 1936 Rhode Island Tercentenary - Coins With Coats of Arms, etc. ThreadLink to my San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge coin post: - 1936 San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge Half Dollar - Coins Depicting Sailing Ships Thread.
