...regarding my 1904 "Five D" gold piece anywhere within the pages of the 2006 Red Book. If you could point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it.

It is listed on page 215 of the 2004 edition. It is listed under Variety 2- Motto Above Eagle. 2004 price in MS60, $225.00. Mintage, 392,136 in Philidelpia, 1904-s $850.00 in MS60, Mintage, 97,000....weight 8.359 grams, .900 gold, .100 copper, diameter 21.6 mm, reeded edge, Net weight .24187 oz. pure gold! So worth sending off for grading then. Somebody mentioned that coins of excellent luster etc...and coins of value over 100$, I should look into sending off for grading.

Were you able to locate the coin in your book? Sending a coin out for grading is not as important as protecting your coins. There are may good products available for that purpose. Luster is but one of many factors that effect a coins value and grade. Most gold coinage, particularly older coins are worth encapsulating, but really it is a personal preference. Mike

1904 Half Eagle? Is this a mint state coin? If this is not a MS-63 or better coin, I would not suggest slabbing the coin. Buy yourself an Airtite or an Intercept product and protect it that way.
While I highly recommend protecting and storing this coin properly, it doesn't command the need for slabbing.
