I don't like the look of this 8 reales cob and neither did I like the seller's evasive answer as to its provenance.
While I can't find it in the databases of fake cobs known to me, it does seem to ring a bell.
I'd be interested in hearing an expert's opinion as to its authenticity (which I doubt very much):

The coin looks OK to me, the design is correct, the coin has a normal salvaged look (not a cast disguised as a salvage).
For that price, you may prefer to bid in the next Sedwick's auction - you would be sure there is no issue.

As a side-note, if you have any doubt on such coins (or want news on fake spanish / south american coins), check out that facebook group : https://www.facebook.com/groups/monedafalsa

Looks ok to me, based on the granularity of the surface. No bad splits, two dates, typical strike, and 25.3 gram weight is in line for the wear and corrosion. $320 seems high but I haven't bought an 8R cob for several years.

Is this the "transitional type VIII" (KM#A20.8 / Sedwick# P37E)? If so, isn't a higher price justified?

In fact, that's a late transitional type (1.PH.6 or .PH. on top) - those are far less scarce than previous transitionals (the earliest ones being the most scarce).
A certified origin could add a premium to this coin, but this doesn't seem the case - you loose the "shipwreck coolness effect" :D

I'm really thankful for your information, Mathieu! Would you agree that the KM# I mentioned (#A20.8) is the correct one? I'm asking because I've just purchased the item (having accepted sellers' counter offer) and would like to know exactly what's in my collection.

Glad you could get a better price !
