Hello , I recently purchased a Solidus of the Eastern Roman Emperor Maurice Tiberius and have it verified at Baldwin's rare coins. It is a fairly light weight issue only weighing 4.12 grams , but it is a nice looking coin . So I would like to have the experts( you) opinion and input . Thanks
I hate to be the one that say this, but I have doubts that this coin is genuine. Looking at the obverse, the bands around the helmet should be beaded, on this coin they are not and I have no idea what that center piece is suppose to be. I have seen any examples with that. Victory on the reverse looks a bit cartoonie to me. I'm no expert on Byzantine gold coins so this is just my opinion.
I wouldn't return it just yet, I would wait to see what others have to say about it. As I said I'm no expert on ancient gold coins and I could be wrong. I often am.
