Really? I am getting at least VF-20 according to PCGS Photo-grade. The "LIBERTY" is full and part of the line of the banner below is present. Looks more like at least VF-25 from the photo-grade really. Of course I notice some tend to have more conservative grading standards then present TPGs.

Yes, took a look at the Photo-grade again. Too much "LIBERTY" to be fine.

The ANA grading standards describes a Barber dime at F-12 to have all letters of liberty "weak but visible" which these are. It also describes the upper row of leaves as outlined but the bottom as being worn smooth, again this matches your coin. It describes the reverse as details in low leaves clearly visible and bow is outlines but flat. Again this is a match, Letters worn but clear. Your coin is an F-12 at least according to this grading standard. I think something to remember is that just because all of the letters are there doesn't mean they have full detail, because the letters in liberty are fairly worn.

I don't consider the lettering to be weak but visible. The picture may not be visible to some. If you go to PCGS photograde, the letters match the VF coins. I think that without a picture, the description really doesn't mean much since it does not specifically what defines weak. I think the issue I see about people commonly under-grading coins is that you are using words not a picture to go with them. Weak is a subjective term. I think this coin is VF, at least by PCGS standards. I can agree just to disagree, use a picture rather than just words.

F15 from here, not much eye appeal, looks a little washed out as though it was cleaned or dipped.

Buddy, if anything, I think people on here are generous and tend to overgrade coins. Seems like in every "guess the grade" thread I read where people try to guess the graded of an already graded coin, most of the guesses are of a higher grade than what the coin actually got.
I will say, though, that people do go a little overboard by trying to say that pretty much every coin is cleaned.

Quote: I will say, though, that people do go a little overboard by trying to say that pretty much every coin is cleaned. I agree, I see this a lot in forums. The reason is that cleaning detection is hard to do and people will use reasons that could occur some other way like being carried in a pocket. I am basing this on the "you verse TPG threads". People have a tendency to under-guess. Of course grading is subject. I usually need some sort of visual example along with a description to give a best guess on what the grade is although grading is subjective. I looked through the PCGS photograde it the "LIBERTY" matches the VF coins and that is what I consider this. From what I hear though, grading standards use to be more conservative than they are today, perhaps that is why many tend to under-guess graded coins. Doesn't matter that much, tend to always keep full "liberty" Barbers for myself found in lots as oppose to selling them.

I agree with Mathewvincent. VF-20 is a conservative grade for this coin. The "LIBERTY" in fine coins is more broken up but all the letters are present. I always keep these full "LIBERTY" dimes I find in lots.
